Venison for dog food

Hi
Given the fact that the game stealers won’t take muntjac, I have surfeit - but I have three dogs that need feeding (see below).

Anyone got any recipes for a do it your self dog food? I’m thinking a mix of meat, liver, kidneys, tripe and some veg, (sweet potatoe?)

Don’t think I can do raw because they are house dogs

Anything I should be concerned about?

I feed mine 100% raw and they’re house dogs. Raw is based on 80-10-10 80% protein (muscle tripe etc) 10% offal (liver, kidney, spleen etc) and 10% bone. This is a rough guide not an exact science I mix it up some nights they have boneless, and then I feed them some ribs/ spine/ neck etc keeps them quiet for an afternoon. Keep an eye on stools you can tell a lot from them, black and tar like is too much offal, white and sawdusty is too much bone and runny is to little bone they should be normal colour and hard as marbles to keep the anal glands clear they’re lovely to pick up when walking! All just a rough rule of thumb though. As for vegetables as long as they are getting a mix of proteins/organs they don’t need it however when I’m having peas/cabbage/sprouts etc I boil them an extra portion for the dogs. Eggs and fish are vital also 2 whole raw eggs a week and fish atleast once.

Your recipe sounds good although make sure there is bone in there too or let them have the ribs as they're small dogs.

I feed my dog raw, either just outside the back door or in a bowl in the kitchen and he's a house dog. Never had an issue, what were you expecting to prevent you from feeding raw?

...dogs walking through the house with leg bones, getting into fights over choice bits, exploding diarrhoea from one end, vile vomit from the other, wife losing her rag, filing for divorce, that kind of thing...may be I'm over thinking it!

feeding outside the back door is a great solution - just never thought of it!

Introduce pheasant too if your going that way so many small shoots that would gladly take the offer of getting there extra birds taken away for pet food.

You can step on both bird wings and pull from the feet It leaves a lovely clean skinless breast with the guts attached too the back bone, just place the bird In a trash bag to retain blood/guts crack legs out of place and knife to pull them off.
It makes it very very clean for "house" raw feeding plus the crowned breasts have a decent bit of bone and cartilage content and the drums can have legs left on as well.

Better than a big wet drooly venison shank/rib being ran around the house lmho.

Mine have muntjac trimmings or if I run out I just defrost a leg and dice it up.
I freeze the lower part of the legs then take them out as they love then and their teeth as super clean.
My will kill for raw cauliflower broccoli green beans I pick out out in the sell buy date section, some dry food with a splash of veg/sunflower oil.
Fallow/Red hearts diced up (not too much) if I get a muntjac local they have half each of the warm heart.
And for a while they get a bit of leg but then it goes in the waste as far to much to gnaw on.

In a word, FARTS, meat fed dogs will do it.
You may need a 12hour window of separation between feeding and house or car access.

Get a big slow cooker. Cut it up and chuck in with badly shot pheasant and partridge breasts, add a few horse carrots. Leave on overnight in the garage and add to some hound biscuit Sorted. The excess can be frozen in portions

i think people worry far too much. initially introduce raw meat a bit at a time with the normal food. mine get all the trimmings i dont want, all bones including the head of muntjac and chinese, feet if they come home, always the rinsed tripe, rrimmings from game birds, rabbits and squirrels after few weeks of freezing, eggs, carrots.
the people that talk about the perfect balance of 80, 10, 10 like its a religon confuse me. do they measure their intake as closely?
if you have enought muntjac to feed raw i doubt they will mind.
my spaniel loves trout but my terrier doesnt. i think as long as you mix the food up a bit, as in not just minced venison every day your dogs will be fine,

Liver is too good for dogs, and a bit too rich for them it would seem, judging from anecdotal evidence submitted by others . The tripe, tongue and skirt are always retained for the dogs here, if there’s a surfeit of kidneys the teckels may get a bit each and the lab a whole one, but definitely not liver in this house!

As much as my dogs love raw venison it can sometimes be a bit rich for them even though they are raw fed. They state of their faeces will tell you when you’ve got it right.

Whether important or not I don’t know, opinions vary, but mine get their meat supplemented by an egg a day and raw fresh veg, they love carrots, broccoli and cauliflower stems.

Dogs here do five kilometres a day and as stated previously eat deer meat ,deer bones/deer tripe/deer livers/deer hides/kitchen handouts/leftovers including every chicken bone that goes through the joint. Exercise is a prerequisite for healthy dogs...sawdust and chicken fat is better than vegetables.
Btw raw egg whites are a no no....do your own research lads.

Very interesting thread. I´m thinking of trying the raw diet with my 2 dogs. I can combine deer, boar, rabbits, birds ... depending on season (and vegs as it´s my business) a couple of questions:

Quantities?
Would you give it to a 13y bitch who has always taken dry food or not worth the change at her age?
Is it recommended/necesary to freeze the meat/offal?

Thanks in advance

rabbits i was told always freeze minus 18 for three weeks because of worms, id guess boar would be similar.
id introduce raw slowly along side normal food. no clue on amount, let the dogs body tell you

Ok, I always get the boar analyzed, a hunting mate is a biologist, then freeze for 2 months. I will freeze the rabbits as well for a few weeks.

ive just read about eggs for dogs. im happy to eat my eggs and the one from the chicken farm i look after raw.
only risks are either salmonella, ecoli and with too much in the diet a deficinacy.
wouldnt trust other peoples eggs, especially from the garden gate or drive
