Versatile scope: Z6i 1.7-10 vs. Z8i 1.7-13.3?

Hi all,

New here so apologies if this topic has been discussed before. I'm on the market for a new riflescope for my Steyr Mannlicher Classic M Stutzen 7x64 (the old school model with rotary magazines and side-safety catch) that would allow me to use it in all (most) situations. While I mostly do driven hunting on the continent, I am more and more keen on stalking (hence me joining the forum :)) but am hesitating between two models.

Two models caught my eye:
  • Z6i 1.7-10x42
  • Z8i 1.7-13.3x42
I read incredible reviews of both but wondering if anyone out there had any thoughts? Main concern would be reduced field of view at 1.7 on the Z8i in tight situations while driven, as I see the scope is slightly longer. Also the Z8i is slightly heavier, which might not seem like much but probably will hurt while carrying the rifle for hours hunting chamois! Does anyone have any experience of both?

Look forward to hearing you views,
Best.

I also shoot a 7x64

I’ve not tried a z8

I use a Z6i 2.5-15x44 for a bit of long range, stalking and Foxing

I have a Z8i and did some comparison with the Z6i and the Z8i is considerably brighter and the field of view is practically identical. The design of the Z8 is much nicer especially the eye piece with the illumination and the turrets are also better than on the Z6. The new ballistic removable turret on the Z8 is brilliant

That’s great info, thanks Konnari!

Z6i is cheaper.
Thanks mchugcb. Gd point! Although given Im trying to find a tube that is versatile enough and of sufficient quality to fit my rifle so that I don’t need to buy ten others in the future (find 7x64 to suit most situations so far), I guess I’m ok with spending £200 more if it gets me “the right one” ;)

Ive used mine on driven hunts but even 1.7x can be too much. Lighter option is z6i 1-6x24. Ive used it and its perfect.

Much better setup for stalking, plus driven hunts, plus low flying ducks.

Taking money out of the equation first, depending on the type of peg, 1.7x minimum mag’ could be really hard work on tight pegs. 1.7-xx over a 1-4 or 6 doesn’t sound much, but it’s a lot in reality.

What do you currently use for your driven shooting, if it’s suitable, why not continue, and buy a second scope for stalking ?

I normally use a Z6i 1-6x24 for driven, and also have the Z8i 1.7-13.3x 42 on a stalking rifle. I needed to use the Z8i on one driven trip, and it was much harder to use than the Z6.

Peg from earlier this week, about 2.5m wide

Exactly... I’m currently on a Swaro 1.25-4x24 Habicht from the 90s. Never failed me but given age thought of moving up to something a bit more versatile. Just splitting hairs I guess :)! In most driven situations 1.7 would be ok, but in very tight pegs such as the one you send probably even the new Z8 0.75 would still make it tricky! Am coming to the idea though as you say to have on one side the current scope and on the other, mounted on the same pivot mounts, a 1.7-13.3, to be possibly used on more open driven pegs but also for stalking.

This is helpful. Thanks guys(/ladies..)!

Ps: how do I attach a pic on a message from my iPhone library?

With regard to scopes. You already have a good driven scope, but I understand the urge for something new ‍♂️

Personally, the driven season is over, so I’d be concentrating on a scope for your stalking. I would try to compare a few scopes, to make sure the max mag’ is what you’re happy with. We all have different eyes, and I’m far happier with a 3-18 / 2.3-18, than the 1.7-13.3 for longer shots. It really doesn’t matter if someone else can shoot 1000yds with a 6x scope, what suits YOU.

I’d be keeping an eye on the used section, and looking for what you want, in really good condition. They do come up, and the Swarovski warranty is excellent.

Then, later in the year if you really need to, I would start looking for a replacement driven scope/sight, either a 1- x, or something like the Aimpoint. Both on QD mounts, and carry both to the driven peg, and mount whichever suits the peg best.

I really believe one scope for everything is a very big compromise.
