Very strange!

Hi,
I’ve been using a Lee Ram primer (Goes in the press) for some time now without problem.
At the range ‘tother day on pulling the trigger on B13 I heard what was clearly a primer detonating but the sound didn’t go down the barrel.
When I opened the action (Break barrel) the primer had gone off but was arse about tit in the pocket.
I put that down to carelessness.
I’ve loaded more rounds since then and found out that somehow? the Ram primer is turning some primers on there side and pushing them home sideways…but others (Very occasionally) are being turned completely upside down and pushed home that way!
Sounds impossible and if someone told me it happened to them I would find it hard to believe.
But that’s what’s happening.
Found the Lee hand primer but now finding that too hard (Some brand primers harder to seat than others) to comfortably use, probably due to Arthur in fingers and thumb.
Must now shop for a bench type… any suggestions?
Thanks, Ken.

How do you use the ram prime Ken?

I have it poking up through the shell holder and lower it once primer is loaded then add the case in the shell holder.
This way I only have to move the ram a tiny amount and can see that the primer is the right way up. I'm using a lee hand press for my reloading.

Given that it’s a break barrel, so you have to poke the cartridge right in there, can I suggest glasses? 🤓

Only kidding. Have you tried just using the priming arm on the press (assuming Lee press) as you’d manually feed the primers and see they are right side up? Would help with the arthritis as you’ve the press arm to seat primer.

I have this issue with t he hand primer too. I just have to witness the primer is in the right way especially with SRP's. I am not sure if its an issue with lees primer tools in general.

Hi,
I’ve definitely noted putting primer in the ram cup correctly then after lifting the press ram the primer is seated upside down.
Ken.

Hi,
I’m using a turret press and replace the shell holder with the ram.

Then just put a primer in the ram cup and up it goes to a case holder (With case) in the top of the turret.

Yes I know the ram prime goes on the ram but instead of having the ram down to charge it have it up through the shell holder before putting a case there, add the primer, lower the ram just below the shell holder, add a case and seat the primer. You only have to move the ram 1/2" this way.

may be introduce some quality control in your home loading, like checking the primer is seated correctly after inserting it in the case. 😊. you look to have missed several opportunities to spot a primer incorrectly inserted into the case.

be careful primers contain a lot of energetic energy and need to be treated with respect.

Yes, Smelly, I understood how you did it but I’m too low down to clearly see (Is the primer right way up) in the top of the ram if I use your method.
Cheers, Ken.

I thought I made a mistake once, but I was wrong.
Cheers, Ken.

for me whilst I reload rifle ammo, it’s no where near the quantity of pistol ammo in the good old days, .38, 9mm, 45acp the lee progressive press was great 😊 So I have plenty of time to admire each and every round made 😊
