Village shop

Polranny, this is all your fault!

I typed a long winded reply to try and help the people running the village shop and it probably closed 12 months ago!
A total waste of my business expertise.

Have a look at @roast.mutton on Instagram. A young lad running a butchers' shop in Kendal. Very impressive, but not ott. Just right to appeal to locals. He's really got a knack for pitching a good sale. Might be a few lessons to be learnt there, not just the shop side of things, but the way he promotes his special offers etc on social media.
Whats his bacon like? It reads well.

The traditional method for curing bacon is known as dry curing and that’s how we create ours – doing it properly is a lengthy process. Firstly we hang our pork shoulders for a week, so that they begin to dry out. Then we cure the meat in specially dry cure mix made with carefully selected sea salt combined with a little demerara sugar for a 12 days in our drying rooms. After which the shoulder is boned out, re-salted and allowed to mature for a further two weeks. The it’s hung to dry age for a further week to allow the natural flavours to fully develop, before being sliced ready to serve in the shop.

What about locally shot venison?

On a different note there is a Village shop close to me (look up Constantine Village Store) and it has become a real destination for whiskey enthusiasts. They stock an amazing range and people travel from far and wide to them. They have also started selling online there might be something that niche which the new owners are interested in and could stock which would make it a bit of a destination.

Edit that, I just found out from the thread above that it has already closed. 😖

Read your post two minutes too late mate!

Our village shop has been going for some years but it's always been a real struggle. It's run on a shoestring by volunteers with a shop manager but through necessity, some of the prices are eye-watering! We lost the post office that was part of the shop when all the trouble with sub-postmasters kicked off and have been told there will not be a replacement.

I'm afraid that the sheer cost factors involved will mean it's on borrowed time.
