VW Touareg verdict

I've had an Amarok for a number of years, and it was due for a change. The Touareg was high on the list of possible replacements, But I struggled to find the right one, within my budget.

Now I'm not suggesting it's better, but I'd say it's certainly worth a look, and that's the Mercedes GLE 350d 4matic, 3.0l V6.

Air suspension, settings for comfort, sport, snow/ice, off road, and a setting you can choose, taking your preferences from all the other options, ( gear change speed, steering weight, suspension ride) the ride height is also adjustable. Hill decent, traction control, plus a lot more.

I've got a V8 diesel Cayenne, had it for 6 years. Awesome to drive, tows 3.5t, relatively cheap to run and as I have it with a main dealer I can keep renewing the warranty which is like a new car one.

Hm, I spent many years designing these crates but affording one of them is way over my pension pay grade, I am amazed that folk in the claimed by the press to be dying UK can even afford them. I must have been doing something wrong.

I bought it 2 years old for £50k, I was fed up of LR dealers and their lies, didn’t like the Disco 5 and to get a comparable one to my D4 would have been £75k. I’ve looked at changing it but the only thing was another Cayenne which would have been petrol and another £50k on top of my car, that made no sense. So I get in and drive it with a big grin, it’s a really comfortable mile muncher and when I’m feeling naughty it’s the nearest to a sports car 2.5t can get.

I did the engineering design on the mk1 Cayennes dashboard including the different under skins on top of the foam for if a slush (a soft feel skin) or leather final layer was to be laid on top as they had different thicknesses, surprisingly complicated to get it right.
My budget will never ever go over 22K as they are all tin boxes to me and retirees never do the mileage to enjoy the comforts, I tried a Phaeton for 4 years but it kept letting me down with flat batteries if parked for more than 3 days which no German VW dealership could find the cause of, a nice ride though.

My mate's one didn't like deep water, which he hit at speed. He now drives a Volvo xc70 after the vw was written off.

Waiting for someone to pop up and tell us how good their V10 Towrag is. 👍😘

Iv been in a tuned petrol thing which I think had about 600+ bhp when I lived in Dubai the damn thing near enough wheelied was epic but obviously not suitable for UK haha.

Thanks for all the input - it would appear there are no major negatives so definitely a very strong contender for when i'm thinking about a change in a couple of months - will be keeping my eye open for a decent one and a big plus is the fact that post 2015 models are Euro 6 so ULEZ compliant. Hope that horrid little **** Khan is voted out and the legalised theft that is the expanded London ULEZ is then thrown out...

Thanks guys - what sort of mileages are they capable of? My current D5 Volvo is on 305k with only a failed alternator bearing and a track rod end other than routine servicing. Tempted to stay Volvo but fancy a change and a 3l V6 diesel appeals as I may want to tow with it.
What sort of service intervals/costs can I expect?
I just looked at a xc90 with 195k. Thought it’s a little high but perhaps not!

Had an R Line and chipped it - was a rocket ship. Nice car, but found the steering too light.

Dreadful off road, but put it down to the 21” fast road tyres.

Surprisingly small boot for such a big car.

Ref the 7 seat option = kids sit in the boot area.
Saab began a programme to do this with the 9000 estate but realised that the kids would be in the rear end crumple zone so they cancelled the project.
Food for thought if you have kids and wify wants etc.

nope, Kodiaq is the cheaper Toureg

Nope, its the same platform as the Tiguan (MQB A2) designed principally for 2wd transverse engined vehicles whereas the Touareg sits on the PL71/72 platform designed for longitudinal mounted engines with 4wd drivetrain. Its easy to think of it as a cheaper Touareg/Cayenne/Q7 but its not. That doesn't take away that it certainly looks like a decent vehicle and seems to perform well.

Got out of a problematic Disco 5 into a 2020 Touareg Black Edition 3.0 TDI. Very pleased so far. All the toys, powerful and economical given what it is.

The mpg figures for the Q7 are far better than the Toureg. I’m looking at both to replace the 15 year old XC90 and my daily driver. The Q7 is at the front at the moment
The Q7 is the same platform as the Toureg but the body is quite a bit longer (about a foot I think). A lot of owners report rapid front tyre wear with the Q7 compared with Touareg and Cayenne, I don't know why this is but maybe the increased length affects the steering geometry somehow?
