VW Touareg verdict

The mpg figures for the Q7 are far better than the Toureg. I’m looking at both to replace the 15 year old XC90 and my daily driver. The Q7 is at the front at the moment
In the same boat. Looking to change our 16p Touareg escape for a newer model in the next year- the price of a new and/ or s had (2-3y old) Touareg is very high imo. So much so you can get a q7 easily for the same outlay.

Touareg used to be the more affordable option, not anymore. And when considering a newish Touareg with air suspension (needed to get useful clearance for off roading as they are all low riders on springs now) you need to go top or second top tier, where as the q7 comes with this across the range!

An extreme example- but for £89k (for a top of the range Touareg, if you want all the bells and whistles) is just crazy for an VW and way too much imo. They appear to try to be in direct competition with the luxury end of the market, and while they are great cars, they are reaching a little high.

At the other end of their spectrum - looking for a new car for mother- mid range vw polo- £32k new. 🤔. No wonder vw is in trouble, with reducing sales, more than most manufacturers.

£35k gets a very well spec’d Q7, I could never bring myself to buy a new car. My Dad just bought a Ford Ranger Raptor for the same money. Boggles my mind when you look at the spec but he wanted a pickup.

Tin boxes have gone to stupid £££s.
It takes the same development time and cost to sort out a small Citroen compared to a Polo at around 400 £ $ € millions per model range, they change out after 500K units have been sold from the old one = the tooling is worn out and needs to be replaced anyway.
So flogging a slightly bigger tin box costs VW maybe 15% more in metal and glass and a higher / more complex instrument panel & trim and wiring but to go from 35K to 80K is the car companies pitching the vehicles at the price the buyers emotions will accept. They do have physiologists on the planning teams after all,
Like the crap tin box adverts showing them running over the Brooklyn bridge or through Nevadas hinterland monument valley sh!!t with all smiling family on board, I have never seen an advert of one sat in a jam on the M25 with the poor sod inside enjoying the Brose sound system.

Hm, I spent many years designing these crates but affording one of them is way over my pension pay grade, I am amazed that folk in the claimed by the press to be dying UK can even afford them. I must have been doing something wrong.
Something to do with Osborne allowing pension funds to be released, perhaps.

As the OP I eventually went for a B5 mild hybrid XC90 over the Touareg. Main reasoning being my old D5 V70 has been such a reliable car - now on 329k miles and other than service items (and crash damage repairs!) Its only ever had a bearing go in the alternator at 100k and a track rod end at 300k. Also couldn't find a decent SH Tourareg anywhere locally when my local Volvo had a decent choice and managed to get them to throw in 2k of extras.
Lovely car, way too much tech for me and its 'only' a 2l diesel, but huge boot and very good on fuel and goes pretty well (Polestarred). Just wish it had a 3l V6 in it!

My pal has just offered me his XC70 with 130k on it. Feel like it might be the one! Good to hear your report.

You maybe right. I looked at the Q7 but older tech put me off. My 2021 touareg has the latest wrap around digital cockpit and other kit. Had a A7 sportback sometime ago and the Q7 felt much like that and dated. Of course depends on your budget
