Walking in to a hotel with visible firearm - acceptable?

If it's a group of four and only one uncovered rifle am going to suggest the guests slip is lying on the hill exactly where he shot his stag, by the time he realised it was too late, a genuine mistake and no one was harmed.
The suckers were probably carrying knives too…

Unload the rifle, remove the bolt, put it in a slip…..what’s so difficult about that. Anything else is just lazy, possibly dangerous and potentially unnerving to locals and visitors who may not be gun / rifle / hunting savvy.

From what I have casually observed I think the electric fences will soon if not already have done cure him !!
More likely something to do with the time of year.
Naturism isn't so appealing once the weather turns chilly.
We haven't really got the best climate for it here in the UK.

Slip is probably in your vehicle, the other side of the mountain/six hours hike away.
I don’t think I'd let the lack of a gun slip get between myself and a pint or a dram at the end of a day on the hill.

Did u even read the 1st post?

A very field sport orienated hotal in a proper rural town which relies on sporting revinue.

Nowhere in any legislation does it mention covering ur gun or placing it in a slip. ( not saying its not a good idea)
U either have a lawful legal excuse for carrying the gun in a public place or u dont. Wether its in a slip or not is pretty irrelevant

On a similar note, I had a day shooting on the estate just behind my village in Kent last Saturday. Everyone meets at the Keeper’s house, about 1.5 miles from home, so I walked up there. Half a dozen vehicles en route offered me a lift, so if you want to hitchhike - head out on a Saturday morning, wear tweed, have a shotgun & cartridge bag over your shoulder - Sorted!

Just common sense.

I’m quite sure he did read the first post , as Tulloch said to if you want to take the risk on you go , there’s to many young coppers and general public oot there that don’t know the law but what I would say if you are quite happy to have 6hrs of your time wasted as the wee just oot o college never seen a rifle before copper detains you to find out what the law is - her sergeant doesn’t know and the FLO can’t be contacted šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļøit has happened to me . In the end I was ok and free to go but what a drama .A year later I picked up a couple of fellas coming stalking with me and when I went to pick them up at the hotel one of them had a rifle on his shoulder looking like an over fertile pigeon (chest well oot) , ok the bolt and mag were oot but the wee ladies going in for there afternoon tea were a bit worried looking so I told him to cover the rifle next time , he was quite adamant he was within the law and maybe he was but I wasn’t wanting another 6hrs of my time wasted . Try not to bring attention to yersel I would say .

Safety is actually enhanced by not putting a firearm in a slip.
I can’t visually verify for myself that the gun is in a safe condition if it is concealed, I have to trust that the person carrying it made it safe. I have twice seen loaded guns pulled from slips, once on a clay ground once on a shoot.
As to causing alarm, perhaps the individual concerned hails from a part of the planet where the sight of a rifle in the hands of a person who is clearly returning from a hunting trip doesn’t trigger a dose of the screaming fan tods.

Just common sense.
Indeed, there may be lots of common sense about, but it is often poorly distributed.
Stay safe.

There are some folk who just need to make a bit of show. I recall two youngish lads in a highland inn bar with their rifle bolts very conspicuously holstered on their bolts to provoke the craic. There was just a touch of the Arizona ranger ("big iron on his hip").

Agreed safety is not enhanced by just putting the rifle in a slip but it is by unloading and removing the bolt.

I’m quite sure the majority of the people in that location are ok with seeing stalkers with rifles in public as they exit vehicles and enter the hotel.

But the majority is not everyone, it only takes one visitor who does not understand the context to take out their smart phone complete with video camera and before you know it it’s up on social media with a strap line something like ā€œI didn’t know open carry was legal in this countryā€. Next it’s picked up by the mainstream media and then politicians and before you know it we have yet more restrictive legislation coming down the track.

So let’s all be safe, let’s all be discrete and let’s all continue to enjoy our sport.
