Hi,
New to this forum hence why I can’t post this on the other forums.

Looking for a guided deer stalk preferably in Fife or around it. I’m totally new to the sport so an estate rifle to hire or as part of the deal kinda thing is needed i would obviously love to keep some of the venison should I be so lucky as to have any success.

Any help appreciated
Angus

Ask Vernon Waters at hendry, Ramsay and waters in newburgh. I think their website trades under Scothunt. He should be able to help.

Just as an aside I would recommend you look for some one that offers roe doe stalking. Reason being that should Lady Luck shine down on you it would be easier for you to take the carcass and process at home. A red hind is huge and a pain in the ass to handle. Taking part of the carcass isn’t really an option as the stalker will on nearly all occasions submit to a game dealer who will only take complete animals.

I’ve got myself on a guided stalk down the borders so not too big a trek tbh and will at worst allow me to get out and try this sport out. It’s for Roe Deer as you mentioned. I’m not sure if we will butcher any catch there or if I buy the deer to take home for venison not sure I’ll find out on the day I guess. It’s priced well I think and hopefully Lady Luck as you say shines down on me lol

For best quality meat you are best allowing the carcass to hang in a fridge/chiller below 5 degrees for a week before butchering. However it’s understandable that as a novice you won’t have a fridge/chiller large enough to accommodate a whole carcass. You can cut up the carcass and allow the different cuts to rest in a domestic fridge for this amount of time. I highly recommend you do this having eaten venison butchered immediately and regretted it.

Also it’s not common practice for butchering to be included in the stalking outing. It takes time so it will be up to the person you are booked with if they do this with you and charge for the time. It isn’t something best rushed and time is money.

It’s actually very easy to do (takes time) and there are plenty of videos on line including Scott Rae on YouTube who is respected for his venison butchery how to videos.

I would recommend if you take the carcass keeping the skin on as its natures wrapping and keeps it clean. In cold weather as long as you can keep it safe in a shed, outbuilding or garage for example at this time of year a chiller won’t be needed.

Have fun and good luck. It’s how most people start and I’m no exception. I responded to an article in the back of shooting times and the rest is history.

I’m not sure if we butcher it there and then or if it’s to take home to do. Either way I’ll be fine, I have two very experienced deer stalkers living either side of my house literally. I’m sure I’ll be fine for help and of course the good old YouTube. I will look to store it for a week cooled then if that’s best. No point ruining it I’ll keep it for Xmas day headed out on the 18th so should be good.

Cheers for the advice all going well I can see my bank account emptying 🤣🤣 on gear lol and licenses hehe

Sounds like you are sorted.

The most important thing being you are aware you bank balance is going to take a hit 🤣
