Wanted: Update on trying to get a deer stalk

Just here to update as a while back I asked about deer stalking in my area and I now have a few bits of information to add

As of recently I have decided to put myself through the PDS1 course (proficient Deer Stalking certification level 1 ) and I’m now setting up my practical shooting assessment with an approved verifier which will allow them to obtain range time and proper experience with deer rifles. I’m now sorting the date for it to take place around January into the new year.

After the shooting assesment I would like to arrange a first stalk soon after , I’ve been advised that assessors can help you get you first stalk in however I’m also going to look here for advice and or further ways into getting a stalk in, most likely I should be available after the new year.

Yours kindly , Connor McArthur

I can strongly recommend @redcoat - he's not that far from you or Andy Bronson at Cotswold Sporting:

We done, how have you faired with the other avenues put to you, beating/young farmers/ cadets ?

As Wytonpjs said contact Redcoat on here. I was out with him yesterday and took a couple roe does. Highly recommended.

If you send him a text this morning you’ll probably have your first stalk booked within the day. The other stuff is fine but no use waiting around to do your first stalk.

Thanks for the offer but it’s about a 4 hour drive so 😂

I’ve done cadets before and I’m aware of bleating and I don’t believe it’s something I want to peruse , and with young farmers I have no clue what that is , and if I do I’ve definitely forgot

Many Young farmers will have parents with land you may well want to stalk on in the future, also tbh I can not believe you have not heard of
Young Farmers as they have branches all over the country and are part of nearly every county show in the country.
Beating can be tough so is dragging out deer

Those who are repleat with funds can afford to go through a premium priced outfitter or buy the sporting rights, beating, young farmers etc. are a better option for the rest of us, opportunities then rest around social skills and putting in some elbow grease.

I would say try and find someone close to you who you can help stalking do the hard work and in return you get to have a few shots or find a farm and shoot the vermin and later down the line ask to shoot the deer once people get to know you and trust you things get easy but you need to PUT YOURSELF OUT drive around ask the farmers when the rooks are causing problems or foxes get out and do the hard work and I’m sure everything will fall into place.

I suspect the OP has neither a shotgun nor foxing rifle, so that’s not going to go very far.

It’s the old catch 22, can’t get a rifle for field use without good reason, can’t get a permission without the tools to do the job.

Gone are the days of thinning rabbits out with an air rifle as 80% of the uk population has disappeared, so the very lucky few have this sport now.

It’s about a 3 hour drive sorry
You might just have to put in the miles.
Pretty sure I went that far for my first ever stalk, courtesy of the generosity of a member of this site, and I reckon I'm not the only one.
There's plenty of folk who regularly drive that far to their stalking ground.
Don't just sit and wait for the opportunities to come to you. That happens later, when you've notched up some experience. Getting started is different. You have to work at it. Put in the hours and do the miles.

I'm sure an SD member close by will take you out for a stalk. I know a guy in Essex :old:

You'll need to engage a bit more with people on here and be willing to travel a bit.
