Ward D vision 800

Hi all

ive been looking at this as it looks like a really good add on so was wondering if anyone currently using the 800 Can give me some feedback about how it is

i would be adding onto a Swaro Z6I

I purchased a WDV800 a few weeks ago, so far very impressed. Definitely better on certain scopes, works very well on my S+B not so good on my NF. No idea on a Swarovski sorry.

Its not not the best looking of things but very well made, seems very robust and is simple to use. Mine came with 3 shims which allows fitting the WDV to all my scopes, that said if I keep it I will get some shims machined up for each individual scope to ensure a good tight fit.

I also purchased a Sunranger / Ruby IR torch with the 800 which works well, I’ve not tried my other IR torches with it but given they are less powerful one assumes they would not give the WDV the same performance.

Shot a few rabbits last week with the WDV fitted to my 22 Hornet around a 100yds or so, no problem. Definitely good around 8-10 mag, less clarity at higher mag but maybe a few tweaks / different scope would sort that.

Tried it on my 243 / 7-08 / 308 all without issue.

Definitely on my 'next purchase' list

Spoke to the manufacturer and he said my 2 - 16 Z8i would be OK with it so your Z6i should be OK so long as you have parallax adjustment

Without parallax adjustment you can't focus the image (apparently)

People say that the cheaper end .22LR scopes work well with it - however I don't have any personal experience so can't confirm

I have had the older 700 for a few years. Good bit of kit and they definitely work better with lower end scopes in general but this is not definitive.

I can tell you that they do not seem to work very well with Vortex scope. Sightron and Delta's work very very well and are comfortably the best compromise between good quality day scopes and top level compatibility with the Wardy add on.

I have some rimfires with cheapo hawkes and nikko stirlings on that work very very well with the Ward.

Parallax adjustment wise, you need something that focuses down to 10yds and less to get the most from the unit. How certain optics allow IR transmission and ability to focus to very short distances are the most important factors in getting the most from the unit. Once you have the right scope and understand ocular adjustments and making your own shims (I use duck tape on the ocular bell for the best fit ha ha) you can see further than you would shoot with the right IR

Usually the better the coatings the worse the add on is, best I've found is a Nikko Stirling mountmaster. Your right about tape aswell, tighter fit

Had my 800 since June last year for the money it’s the best digital add on you can buy at the present time I use it with a t74 ir with the black sun 2 it was very good and now with the black sun ruby it excellent 250y x10 perfectly clear I use a Bushnell Elite /Hawke sidewinder/a sightron stac and a Hawke endurance all side focuse down to 10y hope this helps hairless

How would the Ward compare to a Pulsar N750? I have the Pulsar and a Photon. The N750 is miles better than the Photon with the same T38 IR illumination.

Had a n550 with a doubler and it’s way better than that the added bonus is that it’s still a very good image on x16 mag at 250y and you can move it from scope to scope In seconds and in the summer you have a bigger bonus in that it out performs a dedicated nv

I had a photon which was surprisingly good but then got a ward 800 about a year ago. It is a massive step up from the photon. I mostly rat shoot with it with a weihrauch air rifle. But have recently been doing more rabbiting with a .22 lr and it's more than capable for this. Rabbits at 100 yards using my 22 hornet are more than capable with a good clear image. If i were able to shoot from a fixed position or top of a truck etc i would happily extend this range as the ward is more than capable

A great piece of kit and with a cheap scope without IR reflective coatings and side focus down to 10 yards (IR has a different wavelength to natural light and therefore has a different focus point) and with a strong IR source I can see and identify out to 250 yards. I use Hawke Sidewinders on both my .22LR and my .223. Not sure you will get great performance from your Swaro Z6i I don't from my Z4i due to the IR reflective coatings on the more expensive scopes which are great for natural light pass through at last light but not good for IR. Also the Z4i has no side focus. Mamba and Sightron S-Tac are also good scopes for the Ward. I think the Ward is the best digital add on NV on the market at the moment.

Very good with the right scope. I think that the Z6 will not be able to focus it properly. I have tried mine on S&B PM2, Docter V8 and Nightforce non of which worked very but put it on behind a Sightron and it's awesome. I recomend Sightron as the best compromise as they are about the best quality scope you can get and still get the Ward to work well. The S-Tac with the 4a ret again great day scope IMO is probably the best one to go for.

Another top tip is the ward has a crap designed on off button that switches on when in your pocket or anywhere for that matter so when you next pick it up and you really need it...nothing! It used to drive me mad but there is an airgun chap on facebook who turns up some lovely little protectors that you push over the button that prevent accidental switch on.

In short it’s a great bit of kit, I went from the W700 to the W800L with the latest casting and scope mounting system but it does have its draw backs and takes a little getting used to.
Firstly it’s a little scope fussy in that it really didn’t like my nightforce scope and could only get up to about 8mag but I think that was down to the parallax adjustment. I swapped to a Stac 2.5-17.5x56 and it’s a different kettle of fish all together, can use full mag if I need to. Have sat and watched hares at over 150m and could make out the hairs on its ears etc.
The rule of thumb with scopes seems to be if the scope glass has a green type hue to the glass and will parallax down to 10m your good to go.
The only other draw back I’ve found is depending on the range , conditions at night and mag used some times you will need to fine tune the parallax and IR source strength to get a clear picture of what your shooting at which can be an issue with the quick shots with foxes etc.
All and all it’s a great bit of kit if you want to swap nightvision between rifles.
Hope that helps BS

(i copied this from your other post as not sure if you seen it and I’m to lazy to retype it lol. Have just bought a v8 zeiss so will try it on that also for comparison)
long term plan for me is to sell my Stac and Ward 800 and move to a dedicated NV scope.
