Waterproofs

Galvin Green golf trousers. The tops are brilliant but a bit bright. I have also just purchased a Deer Stalker smock. I was out in the rain for three hours and it didn’t let a drop in. I would not go for a full length zip as it’s a weak point.

Just bought a pro logic fishing bib over trouser (real tree)

£50. So far so good 👍. Better than most of the shooting over trousers I looked at .

I use army issue German flecktarn waterproofs, they dont let anything through.

The trousers come with braces too.

Not always the quietest but for fully waterproof most things aren't.

Plenty of other military ones not in camo.

I got mine for about £50 for the top and bottoms, unissued.
I've taken your advice and bought some, (Ebay). They better be good!

The Ridgeline stuff is very waterproof-not so breathable though.
I have the original smock and it’s very waterproof but not breathable at all
At the beating the other day a few were wearing the newer version which is the other way round, breathable but struggled to cope with the really heavy rain .

Strangely enough I just bought yesterday another pair of Austrian army goretex salopettes.
Vastly expensive - £35
I bought them because last year stalking in Scotland I was lain in a sphagnum moss bog for quite a few minutes, and I emerged bone dry. Nothing else I have would’ve done the job. Believe me I know about waterproofs - I’m still a professional motorcycle instructor so I don’t like getting wet !

sitting in a downpour
"Sitting" is the big challenge for any waterproof.

3 layer gortex fabric is fabulous - waterproof and breathable when walking about.

But it will allow moisture through if you sit down in them. It's a result of body weight on the fabric/water interface.

You're right to be wary of noise. Many outdoor brands are not concerned about it. Whereas the specialist stalking brands "outer" fabric is quite when moving about.

Trying something on in a noisy shop is very different to 5:30 on still morning in your wood.

Over the years I've tried army surplus gortex, my mountaineering gortex both too noisy.
I'm using Harkila gortex now. Which are quite, but heavy when wet.

Can't have it all.

Agreed. Mine is the older style.

Rivers Wet , seriously ? You have something from them that doesn't after a few outings leak like crazy ?
Yes. A smock and a pair of trousers. Only wear them in the winter, a couple days a week. They've lasted for some years. Only downside is they get heavy when wet.
I had to cut the side zips out of the smock as they were scratching the rifle when I had it slung. Also had an Ambush jacket but that was ridiculously hot. Gave it to our Keeper for when he's on his quad. That's never leaked either.
Seems like I was lucky.

Seems I was/am lucky too then? 🤔 I posted this back in September…

”Riverswest smock for me... I bought it off here secondhand many moons ago and it's still going strong despite regular use.... stalking, beating, foxing.

It's my go to jacket for high seat work as I can carry everything in the pockets... johnny gloves, seat mat, bipod, gloves, face/neck tube, batteries, knife, ammo, hex keys and sockets.. The big hood means it breaks up my outline, keeps the wind off, the colour is very neutral.... I used to get fallow and foxes ping me wearing Deerhunter Realtree even though I was sat perfectly still but they don't do the same with the RW. Weird.

Despite a couple of holes and a bit threadbare around the edges..... the new replacement has been in its bag for at least 5 years now.

One memorable day on Mull.... we were both wearing the RW smocks and it was steady relentless rain all day, we were both dry but left puddles on the ferry on the way back over .... result! “

Cheers

Likely the limited wear , the weight when wet shows its absorbing the rain , you likely aint got to the stage that lets through just yet . Shame really i still have mine , i wear it in the workshop when its cold , the big front pockets hold a lot

As @MAH suggests, even 3L gore tex will eventually let some water through. I have the Sitka Kodiak which others have mentioned as great, which it is, but after a full day of rain and constant crawling through heather it too with eventually give you damp elbows.

Not the case, it's 8 or 9 years old. I only wore it when it was raining or blowing a wind. I've lain or sat in in ambush numerous times in sodden pasture and rain. The worst test was recently in North Wales where it rained heavily for the day. The stalking was continuous for nearly 5 hours, with periods of lying down interspersed with long climbs, in driving rain and wind. The weight was due to the fleece holding the water. Often I could run my hands down my legs to squeegee off the water, but inside I was dry, top and bottom ( apart from a damp vest from sweat). The smock was so good I purchased another one off this site and yes the smock pockets are great. As I say maybe I just got a good set?

Dont know loads of guys in the three wildfowling clubs i was in at the time bought the things , none wore them after the first winter . That's maybe ten years ago ? maybe more . Still have mine but its rubbish in the rain and steaming hot for warm dry days walking and most of my stalking involves walking . Wear it in the workshop when its cold its warm and i dont mind the sparks burning the odd hole in it and the sleaves aint likely to get stuck in the machines .
Probebly be a good choice in a high seat but not if it started raining
