Weight loss diets for "senior men"?

No shortage of milk in my diet - got my own jersey cows!
Milk, butter, yoghurt, ice-cream, cheese, cream, in virtually unlimited quanities!
But yes, agree about the muscle. It's mostly muscle I've lost. Arms like bits of limp spaghetti. Have never been beaten in an arm wrestle in my life, but now can't even get the lid off a jam jar!:(
Sorry to hear this,

A good friend developed non-Hodgkinson’s lymphoma and was very ill he lost a tremendous amount of weight and didn’t look well at all, he went from a very active working man to a virtual Skellington.

Slowly he did make a full recovery and would comment how his wife had bigger arms now than he did.

He did regain his weight but it took a while
he continued to work and would have been in his late 60s even early 70s when this happened.

Good food and slowly build up would be my suggestions.

Thanks. Changed meds about 8 weeks ago, and seeing some improvements.
No lack of good food, but the slowness of the build up is frustrating!

Slight hijack here, but has anyone got any sensible tips for gaining weight?
I've always been pretty lean, and eat as much as I want whenever I want. Usually five meals per day, ending with a really good feed just before bed. Plenty of carbs (loads of spuds, brown bread, pasta, rice) lots of really fatty meat (eg, home-grown pork chops with more fat than lean), and I'll clear up any leftover fat that anyone else in the family doesn't want. Usually ice-cream for pudding, with extra cream, and plenty of butter with everything (the pleasures of owning Jersey cows!). Absolutely love pastry too, so eat more than my fair share of that. I don't eat many sweet things, but usually start the day with cake or biscuits, and have the same again at tea time.
Last year I lost 10kg that I couldn't afford to lose, and looked positively skeletal. Really struggling to put it back on again.
Go and see your GP and discuss it, just in case!

I have not changed my diet in anyway, but have lost 10 kilos just by going to the gym before work most days, a balanced diet is the most important thing, nothing is bad for you , a lot of talk about carbs, tests have shown if you cut out carbs your brain slows down.

Hells bells, does that mean that my brain is going to seize up?
Just as a side note - I have just weighed myself (I was going to wait a week and then justy weigh myself each Saturday morning) and found that I have lost 8 pounds since I started my diet last Saturday morning and have also shed an inch off my waste!
My calorie count is averaging around 1600 per day and I actually feel quite good, but I guess that time will tell after a few weeks of this diet as after that I hope to be able to take on more exercise as well. My target is to loose around one and a half stone in weight and two inches off my waste by 1st April when I go for an assessment for a hip replacement.

I did Dr Michael Mosley 5:2 fasting diet back in 2012 when he first did the programme ( iplayer)
It was applicable to him due to internal visceral fat and risk of diabetes .
What they found was increase brain function / cognitive function and all round benefits

Move forward 10 years and he’s now applied stuff learned in last ten years studying it …. Now it’s the fast 800 .
You eat regularly for 5 days a week but try to eat better and portion size correct …. Turn on 2 days you fast .. or restrict intake to max 800 calories for that day … doesn’t have to be consecutive 2 days … i stagger mine and started it again month ago and relatively easy and it works

Paul

Exactly one week into my diet and I have lost 15 pounds in weight and one inch off my waist so pretty much on target of getting down to 13 stone for when I go for my hip assessment on 1st April.
Just a side note - I have now been given a date of Thursday 17th March for a pre-op and Monday 21st March for Heart Surgery - It would be good to be a "realistic" weight for that too in order to take any excess "load" off my heart!

I should have added that I feel a fair bit better physically i.e. When bending to put my socks and shoes on etc, and that I feel an awful lot better about myself mentally knowing that I can beat this weight problem quite easily with a bit of discipline. One thing that I don't want to do is to loose anything off my chest which is currently 45 inches without any "man boobs" as such so I am going to have to start some regular upper body exercises for that. The Crown Green Bowling season starts in April so that will give me some extra exercise too along with more fresh air to help me on my way to a slightly healthier and happier lifestyle and fitness.
Yes there are still a couple of issues that I need to deal with - I still enjoy two 500ml bottles of Porter each night and I really do enjoy a few fills of Black Cherry and Vanilla Tobacco in my pipe each day. Hopefully I will be able to address these two issues in the not too distant future but let's get this weight problem, heart surgery and hip problem out of the way first.
Fingers crossed!:thumb:

It's the end of the second week of my diet and I am fairly happy with the results. I am now only about 4 pounds off my target of 13 stone by the end of the month. I've lost an inch and a half from both my waist and hips but unfortunately I have also lost nearly an inch from my chest so I will have to step up the upper body exercises a little as I don't really want to loose any more from my chest.
Let's see how this coming week goes as I only have a till Thursday for my pre-op and 9 days till minor heart surgery.

Hey Frenchie, stop talking about black cherry and pipes. I said if I make 81 I will start again, but people talking about it is playing hell with my self control. 🥵

Sorry mate but it is one of my "treats" (Which I know will have to stop) I'll try not to mention it again - Just for you Sir!:tiphat:

I gave up meat 2 1/2 yrs ago and it makes it much easier to keep at a decent weight. Upped my fitness and performance on the road bike as well.

Makes you learn more about cooking and helps avoid processed food to boot.

You have lost 15lbs I’m a week? Have I missed something? Did you lose a limb?

I can concur with the low carb system and fasting periods. Dr Michael Moseley and the science behind it is logical and understandable. I get hungry so have to eat but it's what you eat and this system works for me. If I have a blow out now and again it's easy to get back to the system as it's simplicity is easy to understand. I have been at this for over a year and lost 1.5 stone and feel fine. Blood pressure dropped quite quickly when cutting down on carbs.

The only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you eat. That said you can at least make an effort towards that by avoiding sugar or hidden sugar and other "carbs". So always read the label on the packet or tin "Kcal per 100g" (or somesuch) and see if there is next to it in the shop a lower calorie per 100 gram alternative. And where possible and practical for close by places walk don't take the car. Your body also burns calories keeping warm even of doing nothing. So ditch the electric blanket, turn the heating down a few degrees, sleep with the window open at night.

No Sir, you didn't miss something. I stuck to the diet and got as much exercise as I could do. Having said that the weight loss is slowing down a little now but I'm sure it will work fine as long as I stick to it.
