What’s In A Name?

Growing up badgers in our house were always known as Brock, foxes were either Todd, Charlie or Reynard.

When I started work, I worked with a lot of ex coal miners from Cannock / Rugely and they always referred to mice as Moggies which I found confusing as to me that was a cat!

What are the reasons behind these names, and what other regional / local names are out there?

Badgers are Brocks here in Scotland, too. At least as far as I've ever known. Foxes were 'Tods' where I grew up in Lanarkshire. No idea why

It is of Middle English origin, and the meaning of Todd is "fox". The name possibly refers to a fox hunter. It remains a dialectal word for a fox in some parts of Britain. Tod is a Scottish nickname for a clever or wily person.

Many of my friends parents and my own grandparents were coal miners in that area. I can still remember going down West Cannock No.5 with a shift and seeing the "Moggie traps" made with barrels, planks and suspended bait! I'm from there and don't know the origin of the term!
