what defines a custom rifle

I hate the term "custom rifle" with a passion. It's not custom, it's just a load of off the shelf parts screwed together. "Custom action" is basically a fancy way of saying I dropped about 2 grand on a remington copy lol.
That ain’t necessarily so…..

I once had a Austrian holiday spending several days in Ferlach, I felt just like a boy in a toy shop. :)

My Sako Forester is 'Customised'. I've glued a bit of the fuzzy side of Velcro to the for-end to attach the rat-tail lamp switch to.

Oh, and replaced the perished butt pad too !

'Customisation' is a matter of degrees. If you've changed it from exactly what it was when it came out of the factory, it's customised. Hells bells, even adding a mod and scope could count if you got really fernikity.

I agree that the word "custom" should really refer to something that is made specifically for a specific purpose. So your custom rifle will be of the calibre you choose, for a certain purpose, and perhaps made so that it is pleasing to your eye. Taking the Americanism word "custom" is a little crass this side of the ponds and we usually think it refers to motor cars. Something like a model T Ford with a V8 engine in it, pink upholstery and a garish paint job with flames going down the sides. Which I'm sure will be someone's cup of tea somewhere. Yes, I think bespoke is a better word.

But ion the other hand, when anyone gets a stock rifle these days, they tend to alter and accessorise it for their own use pretty much straight away. A scope will be plonked on top and a moderator stuck on the end, which will differentiate it from most others. Maybe a bigger magazine and a bipod. Until you get to the state that it's highly unlikely that anyone much else will have the same rifle with the same accessories on it. Is that, then "custom"?

Custom is made to measure or produced to exact specifics requested. it's not a new bolt handle on a T3 and a cerakote with a GRS stock. Those could be considered alterations or some might see as upgrades, but not custom.

One could also define custom rifle as "worthless in resale market".

To me its :
Pay over the Odds for what in the most are 2nd hand parts in the first place Donor action/rifle = cheap shagged out and refurbed and was probably from an auction for under £100 for the whole rifle.
Wait 2 yrs or more.
Being told its at the proof house! when you know its not ?
Not get what was agreed .
what have I missed out ?

I think we're all curious to find out who the culprit of this was
