What precautions do you take to avoid ticks?

Everyone needs to make their own minds up the tests by the military were only one set of tests other tests reached different conclusions,
Its not only ticks that its deadly to it kills cats on contact causes severe neurological problems in dogs, causes cancer
In mice has been found to cause problems in horses and not recommended for use by women who may be pregnant.
also linked to Gulf War Syndrome though not proven.
Almost certainly carcinogenic in humans but level used to treat clothing is thought to be safe but a safe level hasnever really been determined.
I spent weeks trawling the net for information and its inconclusive some scientists declaring it safe and others the exact opposite.
Everyone needs to make up their own mind . I for one refuse to use it.
 
I have had two ticks in the last 2 months and both have resulted in swelling, like a cleg bite. neather was on me for more than a hour or two. Both ended up seriously itchy the day after.

It certainly hasnt killed my cats! and there bedding is sprayed regular.
 
I agree that permethrin is reckoned to be 'deadly' toxic to felines of all description if ingested, BT, but I regard it as 'safe' for human use as household fly sprays (which I don't use), woodworm treatment in the house, sheep dip, etc, but given the risks involved with tick bites, from time to time and where I'm in tick infested areas, a suitably diluted solution sprayed on the outer of ones trousers has served me well, though I'm sure too that I won't escape the reaper when my time draws nigh.

A very good friend died as a result of very bad reaction to the antibiotics given him in hospital to counter the tick borne illness he had developed, which was truly a tragedy.

Only discovered today that bulls eye rashes can appear anywhere on the body and not necessarily where the tick was attached. The rash is quite separate from any infection getting into the actual bite wound itself.

Never had a tick on me in my life (touch wood) although I see plenty on carcasses. Perhaps my former life as a sheep farmer and regular soaking in OP dips and cypermethrin pour ons has had a permanent effect!
 
Spray all clothing with permathrin. Got a litre of concentrate for £30. Will make 100s of spray bottles of diluted spray. One cap full each bottle with water.

I spray clothing the night before each outing. Tuck in clothes where possible and normally wear wellies anyway.

Neck and hands get deet spray, a tiny amount as its super concentrated stuff from Finland. Face I just use "Simple" brand light moisturiser...mosquitos never touch my face...perhaps also works on tics... not had a bite yet that I know of... touch wood.

Its called Lignum Insecticide pro. 1 litre for £30 delivered. Not sure on the active ingrediant percentage as it doesn't seem to state it. It is sold by a company called permagard.

spritz of ballistol on boots (also best way to keep them maintained) and lower half of trousers,,also keeps dew out,,quick spritz on wrists and wipe over face, then I can also enjoy the godly smell of this magic potion for hours...ahhhh, heavenly Ballistol

My only advice is to change from your stalking clothes as soon as possible after a stalk ,especially after handling a carcass

Great stuff but I can't agree about the smell it pongs!
