When they have you over a barrel...

Shooting in a bit of a competition (I know right!) - so literally anything could happen.

The issue being that the GGG ammunition which I will be using, comes with a health warning. There is a particular batch which has (fairly rare) on occasions caused the extractor to fail on folk's rifles.

I am stuck with the ammo. and so thought I would just 'wing it'. Then last month at Bisley, I met a chap who had had this happen on his AI rifle.

Fcuk. I am taking my AI rifle, and if it can happen in those rifles it can happen to any rifle.

Discretion being the better part of valour, I thought I would (for once) be prepared - and earn that badge...

So, today I managed to source one, and it is on its way.

Now that I have ordered one; you and I both know that I will never need it. Had I not ordered it, the rifle would have failed on the first shoot, and I would have travelled an awful long way for not very much.

I knew I was in trouble when the chap on the phone began by apologising for the price...

"We don't set the price. The factory set the price. It's outrageous but it is what it is..."

£105 with postage is what it fing is.😳

So, whilst they very much 'have me over a barrel', I thought I would leave you with an image of a 'happier' shooting over a barrel...

This is 2019 308 155 grain ammo I expect RPAs and Barnards were particular prone to breaking or dislodging the extractor. It’s a very real issue hence why it was sold so cheap but with the purchaser accepting g the risk.

In 2019 2 gunsmiths spend the TR imperial constantly (10days) replacing or refitting extractors FOC because of the issue.

Right then.

The Club has agreed to 'take back', the GGG ammunition - they are happy to continue to use it in the Club gun.:-|

Notwithstanding I have already ordered a replacement extractor clip (can't hurt I suppose), I now have to source some 155gr ammunition that is suitable for long distance.

@caberslash I have emailed your recommendation and asked it they deliver ammunition.

£100 delivery to a local RFD (where there will, I have no doubt, be more fees).😳

There will certainly be options:

Where are you located?

When do you need it by?

How many rounds?

Are you limited to 155grn .308? No 168/175 grn?

Worst case scenario, PPU Match will be just fine:

Annoyingly, I have DOPE for the 155gr and have left it rather late to amend that (although I now understand that for long shooting, I may have been better off with a 175gr bullet.

I will pop into Bisley (relative to Scotland that is) and see what they have in the NRA office.

If they were selling GGG with the 'fault', they must have new stock without.

Good luck getting sorted - shout out to us lot oop norff if you are stuck.

Absolutely correct.

However, I was not aware it was ammunition was from this batch, then I bought it from my Club.

No drama, as it is going back into the Club's armoury for use on their (apparently) indestructible rifle...🤔

I'm surprised there is any 2019 left in circulation. My Barnard P Action is at HPS for rebarreling and I asked him to fix the extractor rod, as it had been bent with that ammo. Not stopped me shooting but my fingers are big sausages and it made removing an empty a pain when shooting TR.

All that said, I'm a big fan of GGG Imperial, it consistently outshot my reloads, less than .5 MOA in my Bartlein Barrel and the brass is superb for reloading.

When I asked recently when GGG Imperial would be available in amounts in the range office I was told, maybe May, maybe not.

...the brass is superb for reloading.
May I ask, did you have any trouble de-priming this brass?

This weekend I prepared .308 brass in RWS, Federal, Lapua and GGG (I had shot twenty rounds without breaking the extractor).

I was using a Redding universal de-primer.

It did all the RWS, Federal and Lapua without drama. It broke on the first GGG piece of brass.
