Where does venison meat come from?

I noticed the 2013 date - dear old David H & the deer initiative. An excellent idea in in theory, fast forward 10 years would be great to hear how it’s all panned out.

I think we all know the answer to that. The DI folded, BDS took its assets and name and now they are trying to reinvent themselves under a new name.

I knew about the DI folding etc just more the con you venison supply - how did it all go, pretty confident it failed but why?
People go in about change but if there is no market place for it in the supermarkets then possibly a different approach is required. Our local butcher has a fair bit of venison trade…….

If you could process the meat, and sell half/full beast boxed at a reasonable price, people would buy it delivered to their door.

I think venison is seen as an expensive choice (certainly is in the supermarkets) and also not to everyone's tastes - particularly by those who haven't tried it.

A mate of mine sells meat via mail-order - he does OK and it is certainly doable.

I don't think we should criticise that little video on the basis of technicalities and trivia known only to those in the industry. The audience it's directed at won't have a clue about any of that, and won't spot any inconsistencies.
I think it puts a pretty good case across to the general public.

I have cured a lot of people of their venison phobia which mainly comes imo from people eating old cull hinds and bucks which the older generation (older than me who is 60) hanging it anlong time. I like gamey meat as I was bought up on it but not everyone's taste.

Interesting take on it, can you elaborate on the BDS involvement? I thought BASC were playing some part too? As for ‘Assets’, I don’t think the DI really ever had any to speak of apart from staff and they happened to get really lucky and find themselves getting incredibly similar new roles in the FC.

I think David is now part of the FC, i believe he is still trying to get our Venison in to the market place.

A friend on here showed me venison mince available in Tesco,at £6.99/400g (this in response to me showing him current rates paid by a well known large game dealer). It struck me that venison should really be a lot cheaper (if it's wild, which is what FLS contractors are turning in which must outweigh input from private sources ?) as it doesn't require fed and managed from birth to slaughter? Perhaps an overly simplistic theory. But I just can't see venison flying off the shelves at that price. There was no guarantee it was wild venison. There was also a reference to aiming to be lead free, which led me to (briefly, admittedly) searching t'interweb for lead detection systems for butchers and meat processing, which produced no results.
