Which large cal

Afternoon guys,

What’s everyone’s choice of larger Cal’s? Got my renewal in and looking to go for larger than the 243 for red/ sika fallow and bore!

Ive got 7mm rem mag, some might call over kill but i find it pretty mild to shoot, not overly destructive and a bit different.
308 is the sensible choice

.308 - use it for fallow, roe and muntjac. Not excessive damage on any of the species and also legal for boar.

With 220 grain bullets it is pretty close the punch of a 9.3 x62

Had .308 for years, did nothing wrong and very happy with killing power, rifle was unmoderated and switched to .30-06 when I bought a new one. A bit more whoomph, a bit more recoil, greater selection of heavier rounds for boar, I have a relatively light rifle and the only negative vs .308 is a bit more muzzle flip when trying to observe the shot.

Do you reload or will you buy factory ammo?
I had a .270 but swapped it for a .308 as bullet choice was better, I preferred to shoot the .270
My current 7mm is a .280ai which I really like

35 Whelen for the big stuff but I also have a .270 for anything that needs factory ammo and a 7mm Rem Mag for long range.

Long action - .270

Short action - .308

I have both, and absolutely prefer the .270. That's just my own preference though. Both are fantastic calibres.

For me personally, would be .308...
Tried and tested calibre, wide variety of ammo in most shops (factory/reloading options), every brand produces their rifles in 308 and suitable for all species in the UK.

30-06 is such a versatile calibre - highly recommended. Or .375 H&H if you want something even bigger

30-06. Wonderful if you reload. Enough punch for here and abroad. Plenty of lighter bullets available if you wish to shoot smaller stuff.

I load my .270 to practically match that, ballistically. Except I use 130g bullets rather than 140. Perfect roe deer rifle in my opinion

Driven Boar, or shooting boar at night over a bait station ? BIG difference.
