Which method would you use?

I don't know, the secret has to be to use just enough gun so that every thing is contained.

That's also why I'd personally prefer the moderated .410 to a knife.

If the buck had been lying as in the photo when found then a knife might be a better option.....but it wasn't. Personally I don't relish the thought of lying on the road, with public and police onlookers, trying to grab an active muntjac buck's head from somewhere under the car with one hand whilst holding a knife in the other.

Seen too many photos of dogs with horrendous wounds inflicted by muntjac tusks, so I'd also be concerned about my own safety if it was very much alive. On second thoughts, maybe I should pack a pair of mesh gauntlets with my HAD kit :-|

Come on Tony, tell us what you did!

How many on here have used the atlas joint method of dispatch ?
I used it once on a fallow buck ! Wow what an unpleasant experience that was !!!!

Mortality wounded fallow buck still had eye response so I thought I’d do the Atlas joint.
Stuck knife in to the base of the skull and all hell broke loose, it’s head was flung forwards and backwards, back hooves were flailing all the time I’m trying to sever the spinal cord laying on my side with one hand on its antlers and my feet on its back.
It seemed to go on for ages but probably wasn’t that long before I’d finished the job !
But next time I’d put another shot in it

I just bleed a deer when using a knife, stick in base of neck and let the blood flow. Death is quick (10-15 seconds)
I find this better as your other hand can be controlling the head and the knife is further from the head so you are less likely to stab yourself than if you are going for the atlas joint

.22 into the chest might be a viable option with the hope it wouldnt pass through if not your going to have to try and get a knife in there but looking at it i wouldnt mind betting his head would still be rather mobile

For me, a 410 shotgun is always the first choice, and with a 2" cartridge all of the shot would stay in the animal's head. I would have no qualms about using it in a situation like this, where the animal was stuck in a vehicle or some similar confined space.
A shotgun isn't always to hand when you need it though, but a knife is. Well, mine is anyway. I've despatched a fair number with my trusty Buck 110, either through the atlas joint or by bleeding (cutting under the jaw to severe major blood vessels). The knife would never be my first choice, but sometimes it's the only choice.

Double win as you can then sell it in to the Halal market ( Tchnicaly I think you need to do a quick prayer as well but probably just splitting hairs )

I have occasionally caught foxes in my Larsen traps. I rapidly learnt that a 12 bore was “ a bit too much gun” for the Larsen trap. A 22 bird shot cartridge placed against the skull did a remarkably good, quiet, job. Admittedly a muntjacs skull is probably thicker but might be worth testing first on a dead one.

Moderated .410 to back of head, you don't know how much life its got in it to be messing around with a knife , could be you ending up getting stuck with the knife!

The best tool you had at hand to get the desired result ! Reason being even Amazon dont deliver stuff that fast . If you cant handle that dont do roadside dispatch.
However if it was about something to have with you on calls it would alway be worth a .22 chambered firearm because it does give you a very wide range of special loads. If i was gullible enough to take on this work on call out i would 100% want a little 22 rf moderated pistol in my kit and a range of different ammo.
Guarantee i could still deal with it if i was Jonny on the spot without personal injury with something from the regular work truck
