Which Secondhand Pickup?

I'm currently looking for a new work truck, which also will be towing 3.5ton. What engine has your dmax got and did you go for auto or manual? Just concerned the smaller engine would let it down compared to the hilux?
It has the 1.9 engine in auto.
I honestly couldn't wait to get rid of the 2.5ltr one , I couldn't live with the gearbox.

I looked at the market 3 years ago for a new pick up and short listed down to the Isuzu and the Toyota, in the end I went for the Toyota as I liked the bigger engine and the refinement. I just had my Toyota stolen and am back looking at another new one. The crazy thing is that the value of my old Toyota Hilux is pretty high, I'll see how the insurance works out but I'm guessing that in the end I'm not putting a lot of additional money to get a new Toyota.

If I was just driving locally and not doing long towing journeys, I would opt for an Isuzu dmax, they are very capable and are great value.

I think secondhand is a different game, it depends on what you can find and what sort of deal you are getting, what mileage and condition the vehicle comes in. A used Toyota will cost more because they are more expensive new and they tend to hold their value well. I would certainly buy a used Isuzu dmax but if your use is heavy towing I'd stick with a bigger engine alternative vehicle. Good luck in your search.

I’ve owned several L200’s, Discovery’s and Range Rover’s.
The only one thing I didn’t like about the L200’s were the relatively flat seats, otherwise utterly brilliant in all respects
Currently have a 2014 RR and love it

we run 3 x ford rangers at work, all 3.2 as they're chain driven over belt. i don't mind them

however i have driven a 2017 navara which is coil sprung all round as opposed to leaf spring on the rear and its a nicer drive

driven a dmax, found them underpowered.

hilux have the best reputation though

I have an Isuzu dmax, the smaller engined variety (1.9), and I regularly do a round trip of almost 700 miles towing a fully loaded twin-deck livestock trailer (which is right up to - and sometimes over - the 3.5t limit).
My previous two vehicles were L200s, brand new when I got them, bigger engines than the Isuzu, but certainly no better at towing. If anything, not so good as the Isuzu.
So, if you're looking for a towing vehicle, my experience says don't dismiss the dmax.

Ford Rangers are terrible endless problems with DPF system constant ABS faults plus’s the wet belt cost ,personally I would stay clear of the Mitsubishi components are very expensive PM sensor on the exhaust £1200 NOX sensor in exhaust £1500 we’ll know head gasket problems at 80,000 miles and above ,we have a few Nissans in the workshop up to now no problems Isuzu are very popular in our area apart from a few broken rear suspension springs and a few prop shaft joints they seem pretty capable

There was a thread a couple of years ago but restarting.

Have a 2012 Range Rover that is a brilliant drive and has been utterly reliable, but at 140k miles (130k by me) it's getting expensive to maintain as a daily car. Will keep it for comfortable long runs but want a daily user. Can put a pick up through business in Ireland where cars are bloody expensive. Need to tow, drive 2 hours to stalking, shift loads and be off-road, BUT for a fraction of the time - most will be on road so want a near SUV drive?

Looking at 2018-20 maybe 80k miles.

Navarro, Ranger, Ssanyong seem to be the list for mainly road, Hiluxl expensive and raw and Isuzu raw.......advice please?
Find an original mini pu you wont regret

L200 also worth a look i have a 2018 which has done 60,000 faultless miles, bonus is the don't need ad blue.

I’ve got a DMAx absolutely love it. It may be considered a tad ‘agricultural’ by some but I find it comfortable and do a lot of road miles.
Avoid rangers, have a look on YouTube for ranger wet belts and you will understand why!

What size engine did you go for? I'm in the market for a "new" truck and debating weather 1.9 is going to be grunty enough for towing 3.5ton. I looking for something on the agricultural side of things. As its a work truck

Yes, the 1.9 Isuzu tows 3.5 tonnes very nicely. Mine does so regularly, on some very long journeys.

No ! Parts are something of an issue . Expensive to bring into the UK and you end up waiting . Have had poor experiences using the few parts that are soused none Mitsi . Mitsubishi are great but not when it takes a fair amount of time to get you back on the road for want of proper parts .
will run mine into the ground i think

Part Souk

Millers

Mitzybitz

Autodoc

EK Brakes

All great sources for consumables and most things that can or will go wrong

I will say, the newer Rangers are getting some pretty good marks here in the US. They just passed up Toyota/HiLux.

The older ones? Yeah, many had issues. Just like this newer generation of Toyotas.

Rangers here have issues (serious ones) with failed engines and gearboxes

Have a similar dilemma looming as my pickup fast approaching 200 k miles

Replacement needs to tow 3.5 ton, go off road regularly, have ability for winch in tub for larger deer and double as distance mover for horse trailer and kit should there be trips that require that

Get another lower miles L200 circa 2015/16 (end of -B40 design) that I know intimately

Hilux and worry about chassis corrosion

Izuzu - no, don’t like the idea of 2.0 lite pilling 3.5 ton

Ranger - no way

Defender 110 or 130 and convert to 3.0 BMW diesel and gearbox ,,?

Sensible choice has to be another L200

I currently have a 2yr old Hilux and for me the L200 was better truck, I only changed it because Mitsubishi pulled out the UK, Recently I have been hearing a noise coming from the back door so when I looked closer I found the rear driver side door was full of water which had been sloshing around.
I know this doesn't suit your needs but I'm seriously thinking about changing to a new Dacia Duster 4x4 as I have no confidence in the Hilux with all the corrosion issues.
My mates Hilux is currently with Toyota getting a new chassis, They have had it a few weeks now and Initially he was told it would ready on the 18th of this month, He called today to check on progress and they haven't even started it yet

A customer is awaiting his Hilux for collection for a new chassis, I hope my 22 plate is past the chinesium metal debacle 🥵🤬

How do all of you regularly pulling 3.5te behind a pickup stay below gross train mass? You must all be 60kg ballet dancers driving in your underwear.

Apparently if you want to tow over 3.1te behind the current gen L200, Mitsubishi stipulated the trailer must be a tri-axle. Albeit apparently you can load the truck up with 620kg worth of yourself and your pie-dodging mates even with 3.5te on the hook.

Don't ask awkward questions!
I just hitch up, load up, and go!
The vehicle is an Isuzu with a 1.9 "lawnmower engine".
Trailer is a twin axle, weighing 1,700kg unladen.
50 lambs weigh 35-40kg each.
Regularly doing journeys of 300+ miles.
