Which truck is the every day truck? Problems choosing

I'm planning to get a new truck in the not-too-distant future which will be the every day vehicle which includes driving around the country with work, deer stalking and shooting vehicle, family car etc. I do around 15000 miles a year currently.

I'm looking at the offerings of today and I am having a difficult time picking. I won't be buying brand new but will be buying something that is ideally no older than 3 years and sub 50,000 miles

Toyota Hilux - Theft issues and chassis issues
Nissan Navara - Theft issues
Ford Ranger - Wet belt
Isuzu Dmax - Commanding a premium a less refined vehicle (for a reason, currently my preferred option)
Mitsubishi L200 - Can't seem to find one of these newer than 2020, bit thirsty on the diesel but quite tempted

Am I missing any? I'm keen to hear from anyone that has an opinion on this because I've been searching on and off for half a year now for a truck to replace my aging estate car and can't settle on the right one.

Cheers

You’ll eventually start seeing the hilux that have had chassis replaced by Toyota for sale.
Buy one of those and get it professionally undersealed right away.

Nissan seem to return the best MPG with the best I know of at 44.
It will have been remapped and most likely had bits taken off.

Don’t laugh but a friend has a Great Wall stead that is also very economical, I think it’s the 1.9 Isuzu engine but I might be wrong.

His refuses to die and he’s one rough so and so with motors.

Nothing works properly on it but it works.

I was trying to find clear details about the most recent chassis issues but couldn't find anything concrete about which years are worst-affected, do you know?

Was in the same position 6 months ago, aging heavy / V6 diesel 4x4 suv.

Didn’t think I would go down the route I did but after considering all opinions, quite Surprisingly I ended up with a V6 petrol grenadier 😳.

Fed up of low ground clearance, but still Wanting a comfortable family wagon, space in back seats to be of real use, and one that had no emission control.

If u really want a twin cab/ pickup; then look at the Ineos grenadier quartermaster. And make your peace with the low mpg (honestly the planet can take it).

Seriously though, they are tanks. You won’t look back.

I considered the Grenadier but they're a bit steep for me at the moment, if they could get a bit lower than 40k for a decent used one I'd be considering it but right now it's out of budget

2013 onwards qualify for the replacement.

Salted roads (Scotland) are brutal on chassis

Yep... my current car was registered in Sterling originally and I've been doing battle with the rear subframe since day 1. Won't be buying a Scottish motor again, even though I've got on top of it and preserved it, it has been a huge fuss where I could've just bought another car

D-max 2.5 re-gen fault & turbos the 1.9 guttless
Ford ranger wet belt and as much as fully loaded these are rubbish. FACT

Vw amarok v6 **** on fuel get it re-mapped and these are very good all round vehicles drive very well on the road ok off road

Toyota hi-lux newish models just to much electrical I would say 2014-21 models check chassis for rust
GOOD FOR BOTH

L200 just NO
Navara v6 model ok ish but no to the others

2.8 Hilux auto, and take it straight away to get professionally prepared and Dintitrol coated.
I'd happily drive my Hilux from one end of the country to the other. It's not as nice a drive as a Fordy, but it's much more likely to make it.

I’ve a 200 k miler L200 - 2011 plate

Lots of preventative maintainence- and oil changed every 5 k miles

Runs very well and starts on the button, travelled all over the country in it

Returns 38 on aggressive mud terrain tyres and high 40’s on cross country tyres

28 towing a 3.5 tonne loaded horse box

In this case and with the appalling reliability of newer pick ups I’d recommend spending circa 10 k on a lower milage L200 - manual

Reliable and without issues - and driven with mechanical sympathy - not like a hire car

Certainly don’t fall apart with rusted chassis and don’t suffer mechanical and electrical defects listed in other “shiny betterer “ trucks

@jonny.c Can I ask your opinion on Dacia Dusters 4x4? No hardcore off-roading use, just getting to places off-road that you need a 4x4.

Sorry to hijack the thread Mikey :coat:
