I have always kept a heavy 4x4 for hunting and shooting and Jumping about but I have a lot of travelling to do now with work and looking for something not made. I'm looking a value for money realisable vehicle that can take a railer a dirt off road trail a grass field and not be heavy on fuel. I was looking at older xtrails as have one that is at end of life but a t30 if they came new I'd buy another. I'm not looking land cruisers a hilux or that sort of thing somthing that I can drive 2 hours to the hunting and home an can take a quad an trailer and use for hunting and fishing. I was thinking an outlander as they like a car and jeep and not mental money. Anyone any other advice or opinions. I thought about Ford ranger but keeping 2 cars and the up keep and fuel etc is not an optiin

I've had shoguns shogun sports l200s hilux land cruisers etc I managed with an xtrail now so don't have to be that much that's y I was thinking outlander. A quad can do the rest an let's face it enough is never enough so I happy for a suv. The skoda are nice bit a Hugh price tag for what I'm looking

My wife has a Kodiaq 4 x 4 diesel, and we really like it - a much nicer drive than my venerable (09) Freelander 2. One caveat though, which may apply to other recent Skodas. I have been told that it is tricky to fit towing kit if it was't at least "wired for" originally so something to check.
It depends on how much you need to tow.

I’m looking too - my research is pushing me towards Hyundai Santa Fe on a c.14 plate - great to drive, tow, reliable, good ground clearance, enough tech without touchscreens and other gizmo’s I have no use for.
Find a good, early, 4.4sdV8 Range Rover L405. Mine returns on average 29 mpg overall, 40+ on the motorway.
It’s an ultra comfortable mile muncher and incredibly capable off road. You will never get stuck, you can tow up to 3.5tonnes.

That goes for just about any modern car. The trailer needs to connect into the ecu for safety systems and sensors to work.
Its not just a matter of a 5 pin plug anymore, you can void your warranty and do a lot of very expensive damage.

They were not reliable brand new what makes you think age and mileage will improve it

That aside. If you were looking to buy a Range Rover, go for either a Freelander 2 or the disco sport with the 2.2 engine. That is probably the best and most reliable one they had. If you want a larger one, then the L322 4.4 would be the next best reliable engine. Going from my research.
The important thing is that you need to buy a good one, that has been (Very) well maintained and where they have ignored the manufacturers recommendations of servicing every 15,000 miles or whatever and gone to service it every 5 to 8,000 miles and done preventative maintenance. This will not stop you buying a wallet emptying lump of metal, but it will reduce the chances of it significantly. At the end of the day, these are (or where, seen as) a luxury car, and what ever happens, you will not be paying mondeo servicing prices. I was advised to put away £3k each year to allow for servicing (the full fat Range Rover) and things going wrong. If you can’t afford that, don’t think about it.
Of course, ignoring manufacturers servicing intervals could be said for every vehicle out there. I mean, 25,000 miles between services and gearbox sealed for life? What a crock of sh1t.
Now, anybody want to buy a Freelander 2? I will stick it in the for sales section, new (to me) car, forces sale.
