Who went to the beach today in England?

Roads to Skeggies rammed with bikers, cars, caravans, RV's etc. Apparently nought open bar 1 chippy with a queue half a mile long. Me I headed to the woods! Last UK beach I was on I shared it with a one dog walker and the snow -Clacton mid -winter-.

If it was a big conger and the anglers had caught it, landed it for the obligatory photo and then chucked it back, it would probably be a dead conger before it hit the bottom.
There used to be/probably still is an annual conger competition among the angling boats at Weymouth. After the comp local divers reported masses of big eels lying dead on the seabed around every wreck fished. Apparently the internal organs of big eels get fatally damaged when they're hauled over the side with no water around them to support their weight.
If you're not going to keep them, don't catch them.
they are good eating biggest i,ve had from brixham was 42lbs bloody lovely, i miss wreck fishing:(

Decent fish. I've only eaten conger a couple of times. Chefs are very sniffy about it but I liked it and the bigger the fish, the easier the bones are to deal with.
Not as good as ling though. And even better, ling roe.

Talking of conger, when I was a lad spending a lot of time sea and river fishing from my dinghy I came in late one evening and was talking to the local river pilot by a slipway. Suddenly what looked like an oil slick turned out to be a very large conger that came up the slipway till the top of its head was just awash. My pilot friend rushed up the beach to his beach hut and came out with a Webley 38 revolver and shot the conger through the top of its head! Quite an unusual way of conger fishing I suspect, and one that would raise eyebrows today!
