When I started stalking some 11 years ago I was warned not to be too generous with information and access to my permission.
Bitter experience has now taught me that was the correct advice.
  • Most Stalkers I have taken on my land enjoyed my hospitality: Coffee, food, a beer afterwards... and promised to reciprocate my invite, but haven't.
  • Most Stalkers I have taken by the hand and guided on my permissions to shoot a deer with my rifle, and then shown a week later how to skin and butcher, and given them the entire carcass to take home, all with no money changing hands, have not even had the courtesy to get back to me later on saying something about how they enjoyed the venison or likewise. Just nothing. Are they expecting me to invite them again? Did I hear from them again? No.
  • And some Stalkers who I have helped to get their own permission with an agreement for me to still have some access to that permission have quickly broken that Gentleman's Agreement by bringing in their own people and then excluding me and others who were part of that agreement.
  • Most of the Gents who I have added to my License as 'Authorised Persons' on land where I am contracted as a Licensee turned out to be 'permission collectors' and may only put in one or two appearances each year, and a few of them have managed not to show up for several years, but every year again are very keen on their permission being renewed.
  • Most Stalkers who made arrangements to collect a good head (I am not into trophies myself, but am happy to give them away) haven't turned up on the agreed date and time, and can't be bothered to send you a message.
  • I have passed on a few permissions to other Stalkers who had no land, or insufficient land. So an introduction and recommendation to the landowner, papers sorted, and time spent on a walk-over and tips and hints, maps, etc. etc. Several years later those landowners come back to you and tell you that Jo Bloggs has only ever been once or twice, and after that they never heard from them again. 'And can you please come back Erik'. One even had the nerve to demand a site meeting with me after just ONE stalk on which occasion he/she didn't see any deer, asking me aggressively 'where all the deer are', as he/she 'hadn't seen any'. He/she never returned to that land (400 Acres of Prime Cotswolds mixed farm land/coppice/spinneys/brooks) and didn't have the courtesy to inform the landowner.
  • The last person I helped to a permission in a friend's woodland was made clear it was on the condition he would visit once a fortnight. He did keep this up for 6 months, then disappeared off the radar. This particular landowner has now got four Stalkers, three of whom never stalk, and just one who does.
No wonder the UK has a big problem with too many deer and insufficient attention to population control by focussing on the female species. Is that because in Winter it is often cold and wet? :)

In my life I have been involved with all kinds of sports and clubs doing Judo, Mixed Martial Arts, windsurfing, sailing, swimming and beach Life-guard duties, and course-fishing. My kids have played football, rugby and cricket. In all those sports and hobbies there is a strong culture of looking after the youth and nurturing new talent, sharing and tutoring and mentoring and coaching and learning. Sadly that it not so much the case in deer stalking, which is dominated by permission-collectors, jealousy, envy, hatred, and secrecy.

Finishing on a positive note, I said 'most' and 'some' and not 'all'. There are some excellent and reliable people out there as well and with them you form a long and good relationship and often friendship, based on sharing, trust and reliability. The rewards and pay-offs of knowing those people are mutual.
yep i’ve got one right now in Surrey hills it’s 70 acres only cleared for rabbits, I helped the guy to get a 22 rimmy off the back of it instead of a air non fac rifle and is now on the ladder for fac, i go there to maintain the fences etc couple of times a year, last visit before last i found a high level of rabbit activity in 2 paddocks, i asked if he had been there since i rang him, no i’ve got other shooting now and other things to do, i’ve now got the unenviable job of telling him he’s lost the permission, agreement was at least 6 visits a year to keep numbers down, he only had give me a call as I asked, if he was stuck and I would put in a couple of visits when I went there to check the fences, you can grass a dozen rabbits in a couple of hours, with ease, I can’t understand it, it’s a lovely place with a couple of Roe and plenty of wildlife to watch
just can’t help people it seems, i’m quite happy to do it myself and have a few days out, gate is firmly shut now,

Please do not be put off by time wasters others are crying out for a chance to shoot on land. Been on my perm 10 yrs go every week or 2 times not much on the land but I love the thrill and excitement

In the process of mentoring my 4th person .It’s a sad outlook to keep knowledge to yourself
edited to say I won’t mentor anyone who dosnt have their own land as I feel this is at least a commitment in the right direction .

Have just started to let a person come on to my perm got him permission to shoot and I hope all goes well ?. We need others to come into our hobby as we are a dying breed and loosing the old knowledge,
Yes some may disagree and I know they have been abused in trusting others.

Now I have my own ‘decent’ permissions I’d happily bring a ‘youngster’ who was interested in learning with me.
Firstly though however they’d need to demonstrate a genuine interest in nature, the countryside, and ethics, before I asked them.
The one exception I would have to the above is a chap (who I now class as a mate) that asks me to help him out from time to time on some of his jobs.

Started working in the railways for a number of years ago and my first experiences were that the old timers kept knowledge to themselves with the saying - knowledge is power!
Thankfully those days are disappearing and knowledge is being disseminated to new starts.

In the stalking world I have very few contacts that I would feel comfortable approaching to ask for assistance.
I suppose it’s the way I’ve been brought up, give help rather than ask for it😕

I’m still recovering from a serious illness and hopefully going out to the syndicate’s ground in the near future but it’s hilly and I’ll probably struggle the first few outings but that’s life - and I’m still here to help others if I can.

The only bloke I stalk with, is a miserable surly bastard who is poor company at best and a Royal pain in the arse.

I only ever stalk by myself.

How bad is that? 🤔

I should feel sorry for me, but even I don't like me...
No doubt your an excellent judge of character!:lol:

Hi T Eddie & Bottletopbill

everyone i guess will and still do help people to get or gain experience, unfortunately things have changed over the years, there is ( hopefully) just one or two people amongst the ones who are are 100%. that are wee takers and parasites
when you find out what they are really like, dishonest, take you for granted and break or cadge stuff off of you and sell it on for profit it can leave a bitter taste

i would find it embarrassing to charge anyone for showing them the way, the way I look at it, better to do nothing and you can’t get ****ed off by that, as I said before a few spoil it for so many,
hard nosed decision but some people spoil a good thing

To break or cadge stuff of you and sell for profit is taking the P--- I would rather them be honest with me . Some of the folks on this site may not understand the word cadge for those persons it means beg it of you then sell it.

Long time ago I mentored a long standing pal , I helped him get a cert cleared for rifle on my bit of green and others along the way , no problems its who I am! I enjoy helping others out and still do lol , But in this case he stole my hard found patch with a fist full of £50's .
So Yes if I had my own ground again and add a No as I would't let them just truck up .
Thanks to this site i'v had many a promise most don't happen but some do and for that I am very grateful .
That’s the shittiest thing ever to happen. Get in the door then cut you out…… not happened to me with shouting permission - but did do with an estate lake ( pike fishing is hard to come by)

Hi

I have taken fellahs out, from Unc Sam side, my experience was good as I know theirs was.
Tried to pass a chunk of permission (1k+ acres, Roe, Muntjac and vermin) to a colleague/friend - didnt want it........
Will still take people out but selectively - to ensure (as best possible) future issues.

Interesting fact of the day:
A cadge is an item used in falconry, a sort of frame on which a number of birds are perched and carried by a servant. The servant carrying the cadge was typically not on the payroll, so for his sustenance he relied upon scrounging food etc from other members of the hunting party. Hence how the word cadge has come into common usage to mean beg or scrounge.

He did not want it you cant help some people this is why others are missing out. My perm is more walking and not much shooting but I still commit to 1/2 per week .Yes I wished i could shoot a rabbit or two but most times come back empty handed but it is a perm. So I am grateful wished it was better but ay ho.

I've taken a few out one who is now my stalking buddy and also good friend SCC off here. The others one is now up and away Ross22 the other never bothered.More folk should try it without newcomers we will have no sport left in the future.Im all for taking folk out.
