Why are Fac Renewals taking so long ?

Mine expires Mid May, I put all the documentation in end of December, and Ive just had a letter today saying that it might not be able to be processed in time, and that both my FAC and shotgun certificates now expire mid July.

Out on a cull recently, one of the chaps was Polish, had been living in a Britain for nearly twenty years and was on his third (?) FAC. At his last renewal he had to obtain evidence, both medical and from the police, from Poland.
Another chap was from South Africa and was in a similar situation having to gain information from his home country.

This does not explain speed or efficiency but highlights where in some circumstances it may take a long time.

Some things take time, simple.
Some folks seem to think the world revolves around them.
Home office set the price of the certificates and all that goes with it.
If a profit was to be made from it you would be paying 5-600 pounds for your co term certs.
Rubbish. (I changed from a far stronger term)

Some FLDs manage to carry out swift turn arounds on the current fees. My renewal was less than 8 weeks, variations sub 2 weeks.

Stop making excuses for poor performance.

my renewal was straight forward, nothing has changed. paper sent in 2 nov for expiry on 14 jan, phoned on 5 jan, my ticket has been extended till mid march. phone consultation on 12th jan.
still no ticket.
not sure if i have a section 7.
terrible service

Just as an update to my post above, 1-4-1 variation for .22 hornet to .243 and additional .22 for target submitted Wednesday evening last week, ticket dropped in Thursday.

Just had a call from FEO, ticket done and left for me to collect from reception at mid day.

As above, if run properly the current fees do cover an efficient service…….

When people say they have been issued a Section 7 Permit because their renewal hasnt been issued, is there much admin or legal difference in the Police issuing the 7?

Both are saying the Chief of Police is authorising you to possess firearms so why dont they just issue the FAC?

Just asking because I'm not au fait with the process.

Nothing but praise for Kent police handling my concurrent fac and sgc renewals with a very quick turn around. GP pro forma and ratifying it takes the time. Also thanks for the top tip of timing a variation request with the renewal and saving on variation fees. Lets bare in mind the licensing departments are under immense pressure politically and from a resources point of view as well as many often conflicting policies they have to navigate around.

One of the biggest delays is the requirement for Variations. I have a 22lr with bolt on the right hand side. I want to change it for a LH 22 lr.

There is absolutely no difference in terms public safety, security etc etc. But to do the above I have to go through a 1 for 1 variation. You want to change you 6.5cm for a proper cartridge like the 7x57 you will need to go through full justification.

All of which soaks up Police time, for what real practical benefit.

The key with an FAC is the suitability of the individual. And even the home office guidelines indicate, this is the most important factor and there really is feck all difference between all the different cartridges.

If you want a deestalking rifle - you have good reason. If you want several rifles and can show good reason then you have several slots. But you can only possess the number you are authorised to.

Need to track firearms. Well with SC the Police Database keeps track of where each gun is, and when I buy one I notify the police, and when I give one to a friend, he notifies the police with the details.

Some police forces are operating well and sensibly, others seem to be struggling to tell their arse from their elbow and couldn’t run a bath….

It’s a system that has way too much allowance for forces to put their own spin on it.

Partially brought on by ridiculous government legislation to appease the predominantly ignorant public when it comes to firearms.

Taking 6-12 months to complete an application is absolute nonsense.

I have been waiting 14 months for a renewal, I’ve just had my temporary certificates extended by another 6 months. Has anybody heard that tickets are issued from date of application, not the date you receive them? A friend was saying this is not legal and BASC are getting involved.

Wow! Which Force area are you in? No complications in your case?

That is with Cumbria, I think it is pretty standard at the moment. My friend was in the same boat but pushed them because his stalking lease was coming up for renewal and he needed to show a valid FAC. That was after a year on a temporary license also. Nothing special about my renewal either, I’ve had sgc and fac for around 20 years. No changes to health or criminal record, just a back log I think. I had heard that Cumbria police had been mandated to reduce the number of certificate holders but that could just be here say.

No Force has been mandated to reduce numbers.
If they are failing in Firearms Licensing they are probably failing in other areas too.

Because too many police areas do not run efficiently or even effectively ! Its got FA to do with the numbers of licence holders in an area . Many forces make the job harder than it should be with their own BS ideas , while the governments allow this it will never get better .

well i have had an update, my temp runs out on the 10/3. i need to have lodged my firearms by then or i could face a fine and 5 years in prison!!!
10 weeks before my ticket ran out i paid, now this.
cambs police cant investigate a crash yet im a potential criminal through their uselessness.
if im not fit to hold them why have i still got them?
if 10 weeks isnt enough, plus 8 week extension. how long do they need?
the email then asks me not to contact them as this could slow the process.
its going to cost me £80 a month to lodge them.
cambs police are an absolute joke. not worth the money wasted on them

You need to email them and ask for an extension. This is what I did, I said as of this date, YOU have not issued me with replacement certificates or valid temporary certificates. Put the weight on them, there is no way I would put my guns into storage because the police had not issued me new tickets. If they had revoked them then different storey. But in your case no way.
