Wild Venison Market

Looks like even now there aren't enough deer being shot...

There aren't, and of course the expansion in the deer population is down to a whole array of factors.

However the reality of deer stalking being "hidden away" 20 years ago contributed to the problem we now face. If we had got on top of the deer population then, fair enough, but once the deer population reached a tipping point the old ways ceased to be a viable option.

New problems require new solutions.

As I found out when I took it upon myself to deliver 3 sika stags , upon arrival there was a notice on the door informing everybody he wasn’t taking any more because he was at capacity 😞 140 mile round trip , a quick call and he appeared down and explained his predicament , felt sorry for the guy , but being a good guy and dealing with him for a year he took them so all ended well .
I hear Inveraray dealer is closed for good??!
This going to be a big blow for the region.

Fast forward to the final contestant:
The disconnect for me remains this outfit are still exporting some 85% of best quality Highlander venison but we still import the stuff massively from NZ.

As the guy mentions we remain crap at promoting/marketing UK venison.

I hope the win the BBC comp.

I think that is a lot of why it’s happening, I have one or two so called level 2 guys out and their work in my opinion as an AW was unacceptable
This is a problem with once in a lifetime qualifications without continuous professional development,or means of loss of qualification in any industry.

If there were a central list of qualified persons, and new legislation/best practices were published, it would be simple to have a unique ID login, view training material and register to take further CPD.

Instead we have amateurs in the field of training, stalkers who tickbox to get their L2 and plenty who decry the only system we do have because theyve always done it their way and dont need to learn anything.

The same people complain of low venison prices.

The standards certainly are not high enough that’s for sure L2 is far to easy to obtain and to present a well prepared carcass takes time, albeit it is difficult some times to keep a carcass clean while extracting on some grounds

What about the ones that you don't kill within the set down law.😁
Well that was a reference to working within the deer act.! There are quite a few people in the South East who do not know what a deer looks like through the sight in daylight and also a few who think the dark is a backstop
