Wildfowling on SSSI - Licence

Hi All

I have the opportunity to shoot some splashes within a SSSI, but am wondering how difficult the licensing process is? I.e. is it a formality or are Natural England likely to push back?

The SSSI is designated for the presence of overnighting birds during stormy weather due to its sheltered location. The intention would be to shoot it maybe 4 times a year by 2-3 guns only.

Any experience of this process would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I think it very much depends on the terms between the land owner and the powers that be when it was designated an SSSI. Certainly I am a member of a shoot where most of the ground is an SSSI - we shoot it a few times a year. Most of is a boggy reed bed with splashes in the middle and we shoot plenty of snipe and wildfowl. The landowner retained the shooting rights when it became an SSSI and nature reserve. Indeed within the birdwatching hides are notices about the shooting. Indeed the twitchers are totally happy with us shooting. Makes minimal impact on the birdlife.
