Winchester 1897 Pump Action.

😳Serious money then?
I just wish that my dad had never given his 1897 trench gun to a keeper that was leaving for pastures new many years ago… still hanker after that more than 50years later….. 😩

cheers

Well. Now then. I had one of these maybe forty-years ago that was surrendered at the Tory 1988 ban. RIC guns (as was mine) had twenty-inch barrels. Unless there is provenance I'd be a little cautious. The butt pad is clearly a replacement too. The original butt plate was hard black plastic with "Winchester" on it.

It WOULD have to be a good few years later as the 20" trench models have been banned for a few decades now
Lovely guns the Mod 97, as are the later Mod 12 - though they're just not the same....but still fun

When I first started attending the shoots with the 97 the folk with more modern stuff were not impressed, until they saw one in action then there was an informal queue to have a try of it

It had a 23.75” barrel on it….with a Cutts Compensator screwed on the end of that. Definitely an original barrel as the bayonet fitting screw marks were plain to see.

Yeah, there was always a queue to have a go with it….iirc you could get it to fire almost as fast as a semi just by keeping your finger on the trigger as you ran the action …maybe by moving a lever or pressing a button to select that function? But the constraints of buying shells with my meagre pocket money meant that may have only happened once..and not for more than the 3 shots 😂
