Wool

For years I’ve been a fan or at least customer of companies supplying goretex type technical clothing for stalking and general country wear.
but, it’s flawed, pin pricks from brambles, pressure points etc, not to mention the hugely exorbitant price tags that are now attached to many such garments, the best of which, granted are good, but are rendered pretty much useless if they get damaged by pointy things or a stray spark etc.

So, I’ve found myself returning to old school tech, well, not really tech at all, wool. Keeps you warm when it’s cold, cool when it warm, keeps the worst of the rain off, it’s resistant to odour, blends in beautifully in the countryside, and is silent, what’s not to love!
from merino base layers, to one of my favourite “budget purchases which is Decathlon’s take on a Woolpower Ullfrote cardigan at 1/3 of the price of the named brand, its epic, and a daily wear, super warm, easy to vent being a full zip cardigan and lovely long sleeves and back, for £50 it’s one of my best finds.
between it and my swanni ranger shirt, they are in nearly constant use.
this week a farming friend directed me to a U.K. supplier called Herne clothing, a farmer who rear the sheep themselves, to produce absolutely stunning merino garments. They don’t have many products, but what they do they seem to do well, compared to similar such as Filson Mackinaw, their merino wool jacket/over shirt, whilst not “cheap” for a quality, British made product, it wasn’t over the top at all.
I went for their “Bison” jacket, and first impressions are awesome, it’s smart enough for the pub (chance would be a fine thing) but also feels totally up to whatever the wilds might throw at me and I can see it becoming a firm favourite for general work/play/life. I also only placed the order yesterday and it landed by lunchtime today, non too shabby service!

Pendleton Woolen Mills shirts do it for me at 1/3rd of the price , been a fan since I discovered them in the early 90s while in the US.

These are good, and sensible money too.

yes, perhaps, but I was keen to support a British enterprise..... and don’t mind paying a premium for that, plus, there is a difference between “wool” and merino, and a premium attached to the latter too, and well justified I think.

tried these and found them insanely itchy and way too thick, I sent it straight back sadly, but they were well made, just a bit too rustic for my liking in fit and finish. But as you say, they are sensible money

I never fount them itchy at all and would wear them next to rhe skin without any bother, softer than and better quality than the last Swanndri Bush Shirt I have.

I really like wool gear, I bought a smock from the USA and it’s fantastic my German friends use Loden clothing which looks superb and is warm and waterproof, I fancy getting some materials and making a smock and stalking trousers, regards Wayne

Wayne, if you do the latter, please will you make a spare for me!! I was going to get one sent from the states from boreal mountain anoraks but couldn’t stomach the shipping and taxes, it would have made a £250 garment hideously expensive!!! But I am really keen to find a decent loden smock this side of the Atlantic, the closest I found was petromax loden smock which are available on the bushcraft store website, they look good but something about them I wasn’t convinced about.

I will see how it turns out but I have no issues in doing another to help you out, I am now comfortable in the quality I can do. I have wanted to try one for some time and always found something else to make, I need to find a supplier of quality material, regards Wayne

I'm saving up for one of these smocks;

Be careful of Loden it's good material and it may be fine if all your stalking is in spruce forest but Loden when wet looks
black from a distance and you will stand out like a sore thumb.

Get one of these. Had mine a few years and it's excellent!

I have also been looking at wool smock type jacket.
I tend not to venture out if its raining and was looking for something warm when foxing on a hill farm, going to be -5 tonight.
I kept seeing adds on face book for a smock made in canada from american wool blankets (heavy) so ordered one on #bay, turned out to be a cheap Chinese copy that had just nicked the picture 🤣.
The style with the big hood and high neck really appeals to me for tucking out of the wind.
Cant find the link sorry. (Try that)
