Wool

See my post #1 decathlon do a full zip wool cardigan, or check out woolpower (available on places like the bushcraft store) but be prepared to spend triple on the branded article....

Thanks. That brings me back to my point about wool mixes though. Are they suggesting that before tiny strands of plastic were available to blend in, farmers and keepers had jackets that fell apart quickly? Both of those are polyester blends or similar but it can't have always been that way.

It's hard if not impossible to exist without some modern stuff included and I appreciate I'll always have an impact, but as and when I can I like to reduce it.

i think it comes down to comfort and longer term wear, pure wool doesn’t have the stretch that synthetics have so generally a small amount is added.
If you want some truly splendid stuff look at Noble Wilde merino and possum fur, various options there and a few U.K. suppliers.
or look no further than the Bison jacket in post 1, it is a thing of beauty and warm and U.K. made on a farm in Wiltshire.

Also worth checking out stormy kromer clothing, naturalman website stocks it, they do a wool mackinaw coat and also a waistcoat to match

I've been hoping for something with a zip and more fleece like, but looking at the designs of all the decent brands they're more into traditional buttoned stuff, padded shirts etc. That Bison jacket does look good!

Tell me, as you bought one, it's a UK company but the website prices are in dollars. Typo, or the market they're aiming at? There's quite a difference between £310 and $310 - the latter is more than reasonable!

I think he’s having problems with the website, it should be £295 for the bison shirt

I had(still have...found buried in the jacket mountain! )a couple of the Sutcliffe Farrar Field Classic loden smocks... must‘ve bought the first one nearly 27/28 years ago and then a second Bushwear logo’d one when the first got a bit threadbare from being worn a lot...and I mean, a lot! 🤣 I’m pretty sure the original had a tighter weave to make it a bit more windproof.

I gave the newer one a spray with DiverDave’s last year as the rain had stopped just rivuletting off it (lanolin worn off?) but haven’t worn it this year due to lockdown. I’m half-thinking they gave it a spray of Teflon in manufacture?

They’re Loden type green 100% wool but there’s no official loden material label in there as per my Beaver coat. I had the same smock in moleskin and that was brilliant too.... graduated down the ladder from shooting, beating to decorating before it gave up the ghost... more holes than jacket. 😢

Usual format...Bino pouch pocket on the front with side pockets that go right through on the first but on the second there’s a seam spreading them (backward step that)

sorely miss my one of these!!!! They were an epic design, I took the elastic out of the cuffs as that really bugged me, but besides that I’m amazed they discontinued them, they were brilliant.

I just googled Sutcliffe Farrar but it looks like they are no more ...... shame ‘exceedingly nice clothing’ and always a pleasure to talk to at the Game Fairs of old. They made smocks in tweeds too.

Found this old ‘thread’ 🤣 on a search...

Mereside/Wayne.... if it’s of interest, I’d be happy to send one up for you to look at......?

Loden remains very popular in the German hunting community with a wide range of both large and small manufacturers. I’ve visited Alexander Friedl, a master craftsman (and hunter) in his small shop in Bavaria, close to the Czech border, and was impressed by the quality, functionality and pricing of his range. His “Lodensweatshirt” is a smock with a very cool design feature: the front bino pouch (with practical compartments to carry bino, thermal and ammunition) can be worn inside or outside the smock. The pouch can also be unzipped for safe storage in a gun cabinet.

Friedl is a class act they are located near my wifes family town.
I have too much clothing already for my stalking needs but would go for one if the lotto came up just as a nice to have.

I shrunk mine 2 months ago gutted I could not get another one 😥😥 my daughter now has it thread bear as well . I have bought another loden jacket but it's too bulky. Needs the lining taking out to hopefully be near the same .
I have ordered a Asbell smock from the states.
Nearly two months ago . Should be here tomorrow but had to pay import tax and clearance fee ffs £32.30

Those import fees seem fine to me, how much was the smock? Proportionally when I put the price of one I was planning on buying the online calculator basically ended up doubling the price?
