Just reading this weeks copy of Countrymans weekly and there is a good article on micro chipping,I haven't taken much notice of this till now thinking that it would be compulsory for new litters but it seems that all dogs must be chipped and that the kennel club are going to provide all councils with a scanner.Me being cynical but is this another thing for the vets and the kennel club to make money out of us,who was consulted on this issue cause no one asked me for my thoughts on the matter as usual.Any thoughts out there?:suss:

Motomo,

The consultation was conducted in 2012, the legislation enacted in 2014 and is compulsory for all dogs in 2016.

All down to you for pleading ignorance.

Stan

It's £10 at my local vet. When it comes compulsory watch the price jump up. So time to do it.

Even before this became law I would never have even considered hot having a dog of mine chipped. Costs pennies in the grand scheme of things, you can even get it done for FREE on occasion.
If one of my pair goes walkabout one day (if it happens I know which one it'll be ) and we're reunited because they scan the chip, it'll be priceless.

I take it from these answers that you all think it is a good thing, fair enough,I don't but thats why it's supposed to be a free country. Sorry I said anything,Bye

A one off £10 which is a piece of mind, security, respectful to my dogs who are my best friends etc is nothing. I just wish they'd develop a GPS micro chip.

before you go, just exactly why are you against it?

Both my dogs are chipped and my dogs before these were. A friend of mine had a dog stolen the day after it had won at a game fair, one year later he saw his dog at the same fair, after a very nasty confrontation and police reinforcements having to be called, my friend and his family had to be smuggled from the site in the back of a police van. The next day police called for him to go and collect his dog, it had been ID'd as belonging to him because it was chipped. After all this I'm still not sure it should be compulsory. I do believe in freedom of choice.

I did read on here in relation to the wee missing Teckel, that, as I recall, there were limitations to the fact that the dogs were chipped. I have not re read the post but it seems that "vets were not going to act as police" and follow up on dogs registered as stolen. Also, are there different chipping "authorities?" Its late for me and I'm tired and that's my excuse for not having all the info.
Having checked further - read the post started by Marnie M.

Got my dog chipped for free just over 18 months Ago at dogs trust. I believe in a free country just as much as the next man and no it shouldn't be compulsory. But god forbid anything happened to my dog and the chance of a chip bringing her back me I'm all for it

Ive had two dogs stolen in the past and never seen the again, that was about 20 years ago. The police at the time said that even if you find where they are you have to prove they belong to you. Micro chipping will do exactly that. So take your chance if you dont have them chipped and soon you will be breaking the law if you dont. It might make the thieves think twice about stealing dogs once they know all dogs can be checked. As for a "free country," well we still need to have laws. Its the people who have no respect and dont abide by the laws that are the problem. I am not having a go at the op guy but just saying what I think about it and I can understand his thoughts

THe law changes as of 16th April 2016 in that any dog over the age of EIGHT WEEKS will need to be chipped by law, that now could result in breeders letting pups go at 7 week instead of 8 as to put the onus on the new owner. I for one will chip my pups and keep to my 8 week rule.

When my brother was in NZ third party insurance on your car wasn't compulsory but to encourage people to have insurance it was only about £50 a year for any car (fully comp was a similar price to UK) compare that to the UK where it is compulsory and for a first time car owner you're looking at £1500+. I wouldn't be surprised to see a massive price increase which won't change the minds of pole who never bothered to get their dogs chipped anyway but may but off those sensible people but whose budget doesn't stretch to the higher amount.

I have 3 dogs, only one is chipped.

One will not be getting done, the other maybe, will all depend on if i can be bothered.

Never had a dog chipped in my life,, the one with the chip was done by a vet without my knowing. No intention of starting now just because our arse of a govt decides I should.

I know someone who got a letter from the chipping company 10m after he lost a dog to say that new owners details had been transferred.....
he rang them, they wouldn't pass on any details to him due to "data protection"

because the dog was lost not stolen there was no crime reference number and because of the length of time he had close to feck all chance of forcing the issue.....

All dogs in Sweden must be chip marked. Before it was ear tattoo and registered with the Swedish Min of Ag. We don't get many dogs stolen in Sweden.

Will chipped dogs in the UK be registered the same in England?

I believe that all dogs should be chipped as many a year ago my ex took my pup out for a walk whilst i was at work, let them off leash and it went for walkies and no matter how many calls to cat n dug homes police, council it was never seen again but if somebody really wanted yours or anybody elses dog(s) then it would not matter whether it was chipped or not, the erses would still be off with it and the only chance of ever getting it back would be if it was found and scanned for chip.
