Buy the time he built that i could have had a few hundred deer graloched . Scots gun you are correct some people just like to mess me i would have used the time construtivly and went Deerstalking

When there is a tree available then a suspended gambrel with some BT rope is great,but,it usually is a floor jobby.
After years of backache, suspended graloch best. Always carry my hoist & gambrel and never failed to find a suitable tree yet but i am lucky in that respect as we have lots of them. In my opinion it does make for an easier way of dealing with your beast letting gravity do the majority of the work.

I think Im missing the point slightly.
You shoot your quarry then drag it with guts in back to a vehicle, lift it up on to a hook then gralloch it?
Or do you leave the beast lying there with the guts in while you walk back to the car, drive it to the animal then lift it up on the hook to gralloch?
Either way it sounds like alot of EXTRA work.
But I suppose, if it works for you then who am I to say.
I have gralloched somewhere in the region of 2000+ deer and never have I thought to myself 'this would be easier if it was hanging up!'

Well Dan I guess you are “missing the point”
The “point” being we all have our own methods of dealing with carcasses & mine just happens to be using the suspended gralloch method.
I’m lucky in that my grounds of 250 & 600 acres respectively are next door to each other & I have unlimited vehicle access to both, this means I can usually park up the truck within a 5 minute walk from wherever I decide to stalk.
I find the suspended method both easier & more hygienic plus having the vehicle close by means I can stalk light, keeping all the necessary equipment in the truck.
I have gralloched a few on the floor & still do if I’m any distance away from the vehicle but as I’ve got to walk back to the truck to drive up & collect the beast why not wait & suspend it off the back & sort it then, it’s not as if it’s an hour’s walk away!
I may not have gralloched as many deer as you Dan but I nearly always say “this would be easier if it was hanging up!!”

Doing 18000 miles a year I reckon I deserve some comfort but she does go anywhere with these on her rims.

+1 here also.
Can you always back your vehicle to your deer or do you drag bag it to get it there with the guts in.??
A field gralloch for me taking all out through a 6 inch cut and then larder the beast at home.
I cannot always get my vehicle to within 1/2 mile of the dead deer though, but then I stalk away from access points where the deer are most likely to be.
Not a dig in any way but an observation.
I also as an A.W. hate to see all the carcass exposed away from the chiller it just invites bugs debris etc to take interest no matter how clean you think you are been.

I have started to do it via my sticks, use a tripod to stalk with and you've got no extra to carry and it's better than lying down in my opinion.

Sorry LongShot, but you're a lightweight. The wife's Touareg did 24,700miles between MOTs this year and i've done 23000 with 2 months still to go with my Outlander. Fuel prices are a sore issue in my house 
Point taken about the carcass being exposed, but I do mine like this because I use ice packs inside then into a muslin sack as the chiller is a 35 minute drive & not at my home & the stalk might not end with just the one beast. I prefer to take the pluck & bag it straight away.
This ground has a track that bisects all of the fields so I am only 1 field away at any given time, so getting the vehicle there is no problem., OK I'm lucky but why not take advantage of the situation.

Suspended gralloch - can somebody please talk through the procedure, in particular opening up the deer. Do you open it up first and then hang it up, or hang up first and then open up. When opening up do you start at the sternum and cut upwards, or do you start in the groin. I have heard that some split open the chest cavity at the same time and do a complete removal of guts and pluck and the windpipe.

I can only speak for myself here Heym SR20, I hock them, hang them, then make a small crosswise cut just below the testicles. then unzip them all the way down with an EKA Swingblade. Then I remove the green, then the pluck which is bagged. Then I usually split the chest all the way down removing the windpipe etc. After that if I've time I remove everything above the testicles.

I start at the pizzle and work back to the pelvis. Free the anus, open the stomach wall down to the sternum milk feaces back into the intestine. Cut around the bladder and pull the whole lot out, cut the muscle covering the sternum remembering to from the inside out! Use a Bushware /David Stretton type bone saw to split the chest. Remove the diaphragm and the whole lot will drop out leaving it hanging by the trachea which will be easier to inspect. After inspection follow the trachea down to the head and remove the head for inspection.
If you want to see it for yourself I would recommend the BDS DVD!
