Who has and uses a double rifle? Or who lusts after one?

Just got back from Portugal, for the last driven trip of the season. Having been caught out a few times, I now take both my Chapuis side by side 9.3x74, and my Merkel Helix 9.3x62 to the peg I draw, and use the most appropriate rifle for the terrain. I specifically left the scope for the double behind this trip, to force me into using the open sites, glad I did.

This peg was clearly pretty tight, and using the double a no brainer. I didn't realize my friend Pedro was filming with the GoPro, but I'm very pleased he was :D

It was a really windy day, and I kept hearing twigs breaking, and bushes moving all over the place, but the noise I heard this time was different. I saw something moving, but the dogs had been moving in, and out, so waited to make sure. As I realized it was a boar, it saw me, and launched itself. I was too slow with the first shot, and I could see it hit the rear quarter, so took the second. No way I could have done that with the Merkel, as fast as it is.

Video is short, and sweet :D

That was a fine display of marksmanship there. And you were right, only enough time to swing and get two shots. In situations like this and I try to explain to people I take on driven hunts, 2.5X is too much. You need open sights or an aimpoint.

Arguing that a double rifle is not as accurate as a bolt action, or only has too shots, or the stock has too much drop for a Hubble scope, is like arguing that double shotguns make no sense - and totally misses the point that they are a joy to own and use.

My BBF97 is as accurate as a bolt ie MOA, and the stock is perfect for a scope and aimpoint. Yes it only has two shots but that hasn't stopped me from dropping more than two goat, pig or deer in a sitting. The 9.3x74R will drop any small beast with authority.

Many years ago I saw a Rigby .303 sidelock in a gunsmith's in Scotland. Sadly it was not for sale and was in for renovations. Not seen one since.

They didn't make many at all. There is odd British made small bore double that comes up at auction. Quite a few are rebarrelled from the original 360 Nitro etc, into 7x65 or 9.3x74.

A large number of doubles in the 1960s and 70s where bored out to 410 shotgun as Rifle licencing became stricter and Kynoch Ammo went out of business and ammo got into short supply.

And at at the end of the Empire many were just abandoned in the colonies. In the early 1990s the Lusaka Police HQ in Zambia had a whole room full of old guns with many fine doubles in various states of disrepair. Not so much rusty, but stocks being eaten away by termites etc.
