Rifle and Optic Insurance

I think this is the right section 'equipment care'.Can anyone recommend insurance for rifles/shotguns and optics. Having just changed home insurers it was a frustrating process which became farcical when to cover 1 x Sako Finnlight with a swaro scope and 1 x standard Silver Pigeon required an extra £68 on the premium but when I added the Swaro EL Range binos I am currently using that added an extra £550 to the premium i.e more than the house and contents premium combined?!!!!I've gone to Newmoons via BASC and to insure the equipment listed above is £158. An extra £42 gets my old AYA, Sako Quad and Hatsan escort added. Still seems quite a bit. I can add the rifles to the home insurance but as they are never out of my sight when I'm out I'm more relaxed about those ironically! The binos however, could be more accessible/at risk of loss.Any pointers appreciated as I've spent too long on the phone to insurers over the past 72hrs!!!!!!Cheers.

I am insured on my house insurance for my firearms with Hiscox, I made a claim about 3 years ago when I dropped a rifle and bent the barrel and as the barrel was not threaded in the action it was a right off. I made a call to the insurance company and within 45mins the money for a new rifle was in the bank and I'd ordered a new one.

As have mine been for the past 9 years. The rifles, Z6i and shotguns were no problem at all, but they wanted £540 to insure the binos?!

I'm into making a claim at the moment, and will go through NRA as it won't affect my payments moving forward, which a household claim would. Worth thinking about what happens afterwards, you should you need to claim

I'm with Saga 2 years now, the cover seems to tick all the right box's insured rifles and scope while away from home,and for what I have its very good value.

Providing you're confident that you're not actually going to lose your binos or have them stolen it certainly isn't worth a £540 premium. As a point of interest, my brother left his SLCs on top of the car a few years ago and the last we saw of them was in the rear view mirror as they were bouncing down the road. The rubber armour was scuffed and split and all the lenses were cracked. They were sent to Swaro for repair and they came back like a new pair of binos for a charge of just £168.00.

All of my gear is covered as listed items with eSure for nothing like the premiums you're being charged.

Mine have traditionally been insured via NFU but following a claim, not firearm or ancillary related I will never deal with NFU again, appalling service, so I am looking for an alternative shortly.

I have been giving it some thought and as my voluntary excess is £500 I've decided that insuring my rifles is simply not worth it but my scopes bino's etc are and this should, hopefully reduce my premiums somewhat. We'll wait and see. Hiscox here I come.

We had a fence & wall destroyed by a 120mph wind & Hiscox paid out the £2000 to repair it even though walls & fences are usually excluded. Delighted with their service & cover. They don't throw their hands up in horror when you mention that you have firearms or run a business from home.

My home insurance covers all that, up to the value of £5000 for unnamed components. Anything over that it has to be named.

Newmoons is a highish premium for just my shooting kit. Gunplan is better but the bloke I spoke to wasn't that switched on when you consider what they do. Apparently my FAC with rifles listed was sufficient proof of ownership??!! For that bizarre conversation alone I'm still looking!

We are with CLA for both house and cars. I had to avoid a taxi that jumped a red light and took out a traffic light causing quite a bit of damage to the car. I made two calls and whole process was sorted for me.

Just to bring closure to this and pass my thanks to all who posted. I rang our House and Contents provider for a 3rd time and got someone far more sensible....all rifles, shotguns and optics covered for an extra £66 per year with anything over £1k named. More of what I was expecting but the two previous quotes made me question the whole set up!

I have taken this for the last few years since its inception and its a good deal for what is 15 pommy quid. ($25 AUD)

just to add to a slightly old thread... have just insured my kit, £10k of insurance, worldwide, for £124 with Gunplan (they will give you monthly premiums too if you ring them!) Don't need the liability cover, already have that with both BASC and the NRA...

I was with Hiscox for a while, great insurer and, as has been said, they will cover your guns and kit BUT... their minimum excess is quite high.. this had never been an issue in my head until last year when we had to claim for some damage to carpets.. it was then that it became apparent... high excesses are great for your premiums if you never claim but a PITA if you do.. suddenly having to shell out £500 was not a pleasant experience!!!!

Also, whilst Hiscox and others will cover your guns, I think you will find they specifically exclude cover for sporting equipment 'when in use!' which is the bracket it falls under.. so.. whilst it will be covered if you get it nicked out of the car etc.. if you damage it, lose it or have it nicked whilst out stalking or shooting.. you might have a fight on your hands to get a payout unless you resort to telling porkies on the claim form!!

Gunplan specifically cover the kit whilst in transit to and from a shoot/stalk/whatever and, more importantly, WHILST IN USE.. let's face it, most of it is locked in a safe or a car boot when not in use so realistically, you are most likely to need the cover when you are actively engaged in sport!!!
