The Black Dot of Doom 2017 - back to haunt us.

I did a quick count of the 3 shot attempts at a single black dot on a white page without any other markings. I think there have been 11 attempts at the black dot (I'm not counting the images I posted as they were previous attempts and I posted them only as pump primers, plus photobucket has now removed them) with 5 good hits from the 33 rounds fired. Again I used my definition of a "good" hit, other definitions are available and just as valid.

The group sizes, numbers of hits, and very low numbers of people actually willing to take on the challenge, are all in keeping with past performances on this target and provide a lot of information, especially to the beginner, when considering accuracy in the field and, also, claims of accuracy you see on the internet.

so, assuming my 2 hits were "good" then with 40% of the hits so far can I set myself up as the SD accuracy guru ? :-P and does the job pay well ?

Quite so and my 4" grouping off sticks is why I use 308 when planning to shoot off sticks for a heart and lung shot and not my prefered 243BT Head shot which is reserved for high seat. I have head shot off sticks but only very close range.

weirdly I shoot better off sticks than from a seat but then I'm generally out on the rabbits twice a week and if on foot which is about 60% of the time I always shoot off of quads so get plenty of practice!

I was planning a second target with the creedmoor zeroed at 100 if I had anyroinds left after load testing but it turned out I'd turned the turret 1 rotation (15moa) down too far after last trip to Bisley at 600 so wasted a few getting back on the paper. May give it a go next time we're out though as want to see if I can do it with a rifle zeroed at 100!

Tried it a few times with the .22
Been out three times with Howa .243 and not fired a shot,
decided to check zero from High seat
before coming home.
so ...cold shot 75grain vmax 47 gr superperformance.
1/2inch left, wont adjust anything yet will try again.

Some tidy shooting there, nicely done! :thumb:

I'll have to give this a go next time I can get down the range for some practice.

Thanks it was with a 175yd zero and I had to offset the aimpoint as the reticle covers the dot at that distance with my scope so I'm pretty happy with it

if that's three shots you need to shoot benchrest :D

Well I never normally fire more than one round in any one
outing . and I dont want to disturb the wood too much,
So I just fire one cold shot to check zero every few days/weeks.

There are a lot of broken photo links in this thread (and lots of others as well), this is due to Photobucket changing their T&Cs and they now want to charge $400 a year to allow hotlinking of photos, I have also fallen foul of this and have had to place my photo somewhere else.

This years effort is here:

I am really pleased with it :)

Shot today using my Sako 75 270WSM semi-custom, prone from a bipod at 100 yards, scope is a Swaro Z6i 2.5-15x56. Rifle is zeroed at 200 yards and the hardest thing for me is too try and estimate how much to shoot under the target, but this is the 3rd time I have done this now and I am getting better.

After the discussions elsewhere...

I thought I ought to do this, given the discussions going on in the threads on head shooting and accuracy of hunting rifles.

I shot 4 dots, with 3 shot groups, one prone off my rucksack, one sitting with sticks, one standing with sticks, and one at 300yds prone. The results are interesting: this load is not my most accurate ever, during load development it shot about 3/4". however that has almost doubled under stalking conditions. I had to do quite a lot of vegetation clearance just to get a prone shot, and I ended up lying on top of the stumps of all the willow herb and nettles that I had cleared. I wasn't comfortable thats for sure. This could explain why the group sitting was actually better.. The 300 yd group was ok considering theres quite a gusty wind bowing, maybe 20mph. I dialled the 300 yd group as I don't think i would have need able to hold over with any consistency, maybe I should have tried...(it was 6 clicks up and 8 clicks windage).

IMG_0995.webpIMG_0998.webp To put things in perspective.
A couple of through the scope shots at a buck at 300 yds, he's more like 270 in the first pic.. 300 yds is a long way! That's at 12x mag btw. I think that this test shows that to be able to shoot out that far with consistency takes skill and a good rifle. I'd want to be really steady before taking a shot that far..
