Hi all,

I've joined this forum after reading about it online. Apparently it is the best way to learn about Deer Stalking and interract with experienced Deer Stalkers and other like-minded people.

I'm completely new to Deer Stalking. I haven't done it before and have had no hunting training or experience, but it's something I want to do and will soon start looking for a beginners course.

I'm former Territorial Army so have shot military grade rifles (the SA80), and I also have a firearms license and am a member of a Rifle Club where I have only ever used a .22.

I have found that shooting at paper targets is becoming rather boring and repetetive, and I would like more of a challenge. I love animals, especially dogs, but I would have no problem with shooting deer and I like the idea of learning to hunt and then using the killed deer for meat. It's very primal and I would love to re-learn some of these ancient skills that mankind has lost over the millenias.

I don't know anyone else who does Deer Stalking, and as I live in an urban jungle (London) it is not exactly a typical hobby of Londoners, or of women in general. I look forward to learning lots of useful info on this forum.

Hi CharmedP3, Welcome to the site.

You will be surprised at how many of us are part of the same jungle, but go out into the areas that can be stalked when ever possible.
I hope you can meet some of us through this forum.

Hello from a fellow londoner. Plenty of stalking available within reasonable distance of the captial. It is getting the meat back on the tube that is is fun bit. Welcome to the site!

Welcome to SD. The centerfold of the current BASC magazine is dedicated to lady stalkers. The article is based in Cumbria..john

Welcome to the site. I expect Pine Marten will be along soon he is from the urban jungle but found the escape route, he will no doubt be able to assist greatly

Welcome - plenty of great advice and though provoking stories and commentary on here. Lots of great stalking quite close to London, depending on what you want to pay.

Have a look at doing the DSC1 and take your time with it - its a great tool for learning about deer essentials, as well as an opportunity to meet like-minded folk, many of whom will be way more terrified than you of failing the shooting bit of the DSC exam. Enjoy - from one newbie to another!

Welcome to the site. As you can see we have quite a few members in and around London. I have a large estate I manage just outside Gatwick so if you drop me a PM with your details I am sure we can help in someway. I already have one lady who is starting to learn to stalk deer later this season.

Good luck

Welcome!

I work in Canary Wharf and have been at this stalking game a few years now.

If you want to catch up some time drop me a PM, I'm happy to help!

Sorry, I've been meaning to answer this thread but I've been busy, I'm back in the game now...

Welcome P, and congratulations on taking the first steps! As you say, deerstalking or indeed hunting or shooting in any guise aren't very common London-type activities, and I suppose perhaps even moreso for a woman, but I think that's very much in second place in the perceived London weirdness stakes. When I was a teenager here and knew very well that I wanted to be a hunter, and like you didn't know anyone who was even vaguely involved, it felt like what I can only imagine "coming out" does. It actually takes a bit of a thick skin. You will be asked to justify your choice to people around you. The good news is that it can be done, I've done so!

Practically speaking, I would join the first DSC1 course you can. For people with no stalking background or contacts, it's invaluable. You'll see no end of arguing on here about the validity of the course especially in comparison to field experience, but you have to start somewhere, and it's an excellent way to do so. Are you a member of BASC at all? If so, they organise courses. Attended one in Kent that was easily accessible from London.

Which rifle club are you a member of? If you're able to, I'd recommend joining the British Sporting Rifle Club in Bisley, who specialise in the type of shooting stalkers do. And there are female members too, including the editor of a prominent shooting/stalking magazine. As it happens, she lives near me in London.

The logistics of stalking in London can be a pain. No casual walk around the hedges in the morning before work for us, it's all a hugely involving mission. Carrying home carcasses and dealing with them in small flats is another problem. But you know what? You can overcome all of them! So don't be discouraged, and please feel free to PM me if you wish to discuss anything. I'm always keen to help bring more people onside, it makes it easier for those who want to join us later!

Hi,

the he east end is a big place , but your not far from Essex, there are a few places that you can do your DSC and a few places to shoot long range, if your lucky you can even find a bit of land or a syndicate.
out of curiosity, where do you shoot at the mo ?
