Powder prices

I popped into a near-by RFD earlier this afternoon, I just wanted to top up on .22lr ammo. Whilst I was there i noticed he had some H335 on the shelf (I use this powder to reload my .223 rounds). It must have just come in because he didn't have any last week, I said "go on, I'll have a tub of that"....£55.95 a tub! On second thoughts I'll leave it! Last time I bought some it was about £37, around May if I recall correctly.
Crazy prices and it's only going to get worse, not the fault of the dealer might I add, it's just the state of the market at the moment.
I think I'll go back to using Swiss RS50, I already use it for my .303 rounds.
I can get RS50 for £83 per Kg at the moment. At a different RFD's.

One of my local dealers was wanting £60 per tub of Varget. Recently bought a tub of Alliant for £50. Extortionate! They blame the prices on carriage costs but I think they've just got a monopoly going.

Luckily just found another dealer with very reasonable prices.

Quite some time since I bought any and going to stock up pre REACH Cant think where nearest dealer is Say 35 miles of Alton Hampshire

Any ideas?

That is daylight robbery. I like Clint...he's a good guy to deal with, but some of his prices are a little more than steep. I appreciate that small outfits (and Dauntsey isn't so small in stock terms for an independent now) have overheads and sometimes it's worth paying extra for great service, but £100 per kilo is taking the pi** a little.

I've heard the carriage excuses too. Oddly though, a dealer acquaintance of mine tells me carriage is free from the distributor if you order over a certain amount. Can't remember the threshold, but it wasn't huge. Twelve tubs rings bells. Certainly not more.

H335 is £45.10 at Kranks but delivery is at a flat-rate of £30 so you really need to buy a half-dozen or so tubs at a time to make it worthwhile.

Pop in there occassionally, when I went to Corinium. Always found the pricing there, or there abouts.

Out of curiosity, have either of you actually called them, and asked if there's a typo, based on what everyone is charging ? It could easily happen.

I went somewhere a few weeks ago, and they still had some old stock, priced at the old pricing, and picked up some Aliant at £37.00 a tub !

All prices have gone up to the retailer but we have kept our prices firm
bulk orders are always cheaper to the consumer

US "by pound" powder is £42-45
EU by kilo powder is £75- 79
EU by 3.5 kilo powder is £230-245

pm for prices and HUGE discounts on group orders!

collecting powder order tomorrow so if you want something you will need to PM or text if you want something specific

Greenfields in Salisbury do have quite a selection of powder and bullets.
The ones I saw at the front of the display were Hogden but may have others hidden behind them as the display was pretty full.

Powder prices here in the US are plummeting. I think someone is raking in a little extra profit.~Muir

(example: Lil Gun now $23.50. Varget $26 and everywhere.... The only powder that is hard to get s hold of is H4350 and that is due to popularity.)

Presumably those are retail prices Muir, so if the dealer takes a modest 15% margin the $26./£20.16 price at cost is -$3.90
so $22.10/£17.13 @ £/$ 1.290 exchange rate.

In the UK currently US propellant per lb say £44./$56.76

Minus Dealer margin @ 15% = £6.60 £37.40./$48.25

So the difference between US cost price and UK cost price £20.27/$26.15 is made up of transport/shipping cost, duty tarrif, importer margin & VAT tax.

I think I did the sums correctly, but this is just rule of thumb type indication and doesn't include what ever other trade discount might be available to a UK bulk importer.

Just shows up a fair difference per lb of propellant don't you think!?

good morning ,i rang and ask the question and was told powder is getting hard to get and has to be delivered by special courier and if i want the powder thats the price.so i have taken dauntsey guns off of my shopping list.

Just to clarify, would that have to be orders for the same powder, or a mixed order?

I would be interested in 5-10 x 1lb tubs of various powders, and willing to travel to say Salisbury/Taunton to collect, if anyone else in interested in doing the same.

UK VAT is not an expense for a registered trader, because it is all claimed back. Their expense is having money tied up until the item is sold. VAT is a consumer tax.

Despite the exchange rate, we have become accustomed to paying £1 for what $1 would buy in the US, but things don't seem that way any more.

Ed, there is a service that collects(or takes deliveries of) stuff in the UK, and travels down through France, meeting people at drop-off/collection points.
If you had enough orders, of say 5 tubs for each drop minimum, would anyone be willing to drive down the motorway system, meeting customers at service areas on the way?
It would be a long day to get to Taunton or Plymouth and back, though.
Drops/collections could be southbound in the morning and northbound later in the day, but not both service areas each way.
I'm thinking you would need a really big group order, with money up front, to make it worthwhile.

Your call!

For infomation...
I've just got back from Brock & Norris in Whitchurch. He's still charging £41 - £44 for Hodgdons powder, he's got a reasonable stock, including a couple of Varget. The Swiss RS50 that I wanted is selling at £83.99, he's expecting more in very soon.
I got a lot of time for this guy (Mike), I told him I intended using the RS50 for .303 & .223. He said RS40 would be a better choice for .223, he then worked out a load for me... 23.8grains of RS40, with my choice of bullet & barrel length, would give me 3137fps and burn 97.7% of the powder before the bullet leaves the barrel. Then, he gave (foc) 2200grains of powder to try it out with...
Top bloke, cheers Mike!
