One of the main reasons for making my own is that since I retired a couple of years ago apart from the d.i.y job around the house my tools sit in the garage gathering rust so just the chance to retreat to the man cave for a few hours and get back to my tools for while
First thing I realised when I searched my timber offcuts was that I had nothing of suitable size so the first thing was to glue together some oak offcuts to before I could make a start
Next day the glue is dry and I can now make a start after plaining done the piece for the shield to around 18mm thick it was mark out and cut with a jigsaw and then finished using a spoke shave and fine sandpaper and ovolo moulding applied to the edge with router and finished of with a couple of coats of Danish oil
Next the support was mark and cut at the correct angle to fit between the shield and base of the skull then shaped and sanded and again finished with Danish oil and now ready to mount
A piece of timber was then place in the skull cavity around 6mm below the surface and then filled using a 2 part epoxy putty and left until the next day to harden (timber in the cavity jus to reduce the amount to putty required)
The post was then drilled and countersunk and 2 screws at the required length used to fix it to the base of the skull and then 2 holes drilled and countersunk in the shield to attach post to the shield and a d/ring for hanging on picture hook job done
