.22lr semi auto - avoid?

The Thinking Man's compromise:

"Model 1727F - straight pull repeater in caliber .22 l.r.
The 10000-times proven Biathlon straight pull action with repeating device in connection with the match two-stage trigger allows very fast repeating which results in important seconds for the hunting success. The straight pull repeater action can easily be operated with the index finger to open it for reloading. The action is closed again with the thumb. The shooter reloads the rifle with just one movement of the wrist. The hand operating the trigger will remain at the grip and even the elbow does not have to move. The shooter thus only needs little time for focussing. The lock time is extraordinarily short and it makes a high hit rate possible."

Ooh, they do it as a lefty too...

my first .22LR was a winchester 190, tube fed, shot anything powerful enough to work the action (anything more powerful than a .22 short) never had a misfire or FTF although I did have a couple of FTE with really cheap subs, racked up a few bunnies along the way as well, all for a tenner :D sold it for more than I paid and bought a Sig522, so far that has also been faultless (and easier to reload)

And to bloody unload without dropping live rounds all around the truck.....

I have a 10/22. It started out life as the target tactical model.
I have heavily customised it now, Magpul stock, extended mag release, Kidd trigger, Kidd Buffer, Kidd bolt, Kidd charging handle, kidd 16.5" match barrel (rifles by Lothar Walter) basically the only part that's not custom is the receiver.

I love it. It's great fun and it's very accurate too, but I have spent a nice bit getting it to this standard.

Forget about subs, and bulk ammo, mine hates them. My 10/22 will shoot CCI standard velocity all day long without issue.

I’m not a fan of semis for rabbits as even with a decent recoil stop, using subsonic ammo the noise of the bolt slamming back is far worse than the round going off. I know the theory that you’ll be able to shoot two or three with a semi before they know what’s happening, but you can’t really. Get a good bolt action and it’ll not jam on you no matter what you put through it once you’ve found it’s preffered ammo.

Having bought a 10/22 as my first rifle, I have to say that I'll be swapping it in soon for a bolt action.

My 10/22 is fussy about ammo. Some brands will just not cycle reliably in it - irrespective of cleaning regime. Its favourite fodder seems to be Winchester subs.

Mine also hates high velocity ammo - it will cycle superbly with them but the groupings go all over the place when using it (and stay like that - irrespective of cleaning or number of rounds).

With the mod on, cycling of all brands of subs seems to become an issue. Even with the Winchester subs it will stovepipe frequently.

Those points aside, I find the 10/22 fun to shoot but I don't like it enough to keep it. It will be going to make space in the cabinet for a bolt action .22 - probably a CZ.

So the trick will be standard velocity ammo.

Cleaning?I do mine about every 1000 rounds!

Wouldn’t have 10/22 if it was free, get an Anschutz 525, cheap as chips and cycles subsonics reliably , at least, mine did.

I would like to get my hands on a Marlin 795 which seems like a reliable, more accurate alternative to the 10/22.

I've got one , great little rifle . The trigger needed a little work , but nothing major . Cycles everything I've put through it so far , no subsonic though , not really necessary for what I use it for . It's nothing fancy , but it works and shoots quite well . It's become my Snowshoe Hare rifle because it works perfectly in really cold temps ( - 25C ) that will freeze up most semis .

gosh i must be really unlucky as my 10-22 is accurate enough for rabbits out to 80 yards and has taken a lot of foxes as well. It keeps shooting up to the 400 rnd count before cleaning. i ditched the barrel band and added a recoil buffer and a mag extension and altered the bolt release total cost of £20. i acquired a second hand hogue stock for it later. my rifle is over 22yr old and has had over 50,000 subs through it just drop a bore snake down it every 400 round or so and it just keeps ticking.

Hmm, sounds like mine. Shooting Mini-Mags off a bi-pod prone it will reliably take rabbits at 80m all day. With good consisent velocity ammo (a rarity) it’ll do 100m no trouble. A BDC reticle and a rangefinder help a lot. Very important past 60m to know exactly how much past 60m you are. It is fussy about ammo though, problem is more often than not the ammo quality is highly variable, some bricks it’ll shoot fine others it hates... used to shoot Stingers just fine then decided it didn’t like them anymore. It’s standard except for an added rear action screw through the stock. DPT moderator. I clean the action regularly but don’t touch the barrel for years at a time.

I have 10/22 rugger. Fantastic gun. On CCI standards it never jams and with its kidd match barrel and match bolt, it's super accurate. Absolutely no complaints at all with it.

Anschutz - Brno- Thomson are really good avoid Ruger 10/22 junk and all the bits
Which models of 10/22 have you owned? I have a small handful of 10/22 Rugers dating from the later 1960's through the 2016's. When kept clean, and fed the ammunition it was designed for, it is 100% reliable. Reliable to the extent that at the New Mexico State Prison they were issued to tower guards in combat dress. I have a take down model that has also been 100% reliable.

CCI Mini Mags were practically made for the 10/22. My favorite food for Rugers.~Muir

Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep my eye out for a 2nd hand one.

Pretty much says it all really.
After all several thousand gallery rifle shooters who use these rifles to very good effect in the U.K. wouldn't be shooting them if they didn't work.

P.S. I still don't like them and prefer my CZ.

I would stick with the bolt action.
Mine is a Heym with a 5 shot clip and is very accurate with Winchester subs.
Had it for about 40 years and has never been any bother at all. I was told that the best way to clean a .22 rf is to fire a bullet through it so that is what I do.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has a Heym .22 as they seem to be very uncommon in GB.
