22 WMR or HMR

I'm looking to add a vermin, odd fox calibre to the collection. Cheap knock about gun. I've had a HMR before and got rid, just wasn't for me.
How does the 22WMR compare? Can anyone with experience of both, shine a bit of light on the subject? Toyed with the idea of the 22 Hornet and also the 17 but, limited ammo for the 22 and thought the 17 just a bit too much?
It's to fit in between my 22 rimfire and 22/250, for when ones not enough and the other is too much, so to speak.. Bit of corvid, bunny bashing at medium range.

I had the same dilema. I went HMR. There are a fev comparison videos on YouTube you could watch.
I think the WMR is a good choice, the Hornet is a cracking round though.

I've had the 22wmr and a 17hmr, sold the wmr and stupidly kept the hmr. Out of both if I had them again I'd keep the wmr, ammo is cheaper, wider range aswell from 25g to 50g, a bit loopier than the hmr but work out your drops and it will be spot on

Having had a HMR I wish I'd got a WMR instead. The WMR is better for foxes and there is a genuine selection of ammo to choose from so finding something your rifle likes and shoots well is easier. The HMR ammo is pretty much identical so if your rifle shoots it well then all is good but plenty of people can't get decent HMR ammo or get the rifle to be as accurate as you'd like. I felt the HMR had such good potential but was let down by the ammo.

WMR, simples :thumb:. Used them both a lot alongside each other and although the HMR was good in some situations and OK in some others, the WMR was good in most situations and suitable in ALL the rest, if that makes sense. Ammo availability and choice for the WMR is a clear winner.

The Hornet is a wonderful calibre and easy to load for.

Cheers lads.

I think I knew all along it was going to be between the WMR and the Hornet.

Anyone had both and care to elaborate?

The WMR is a great round, much better than the HMR, buts it’s no .22cf.

So, if I already had a .22cf, I’d get the WMR. If I didn’t have a .22cf, I’d get the Hornet, or even better, I’d get a 222rem.

Having had both i would not have either again, the HMR when working was superb, very accurate and killed everything i shot out to 160 yds, never used it on fox and had no intention of doing so, for me it just does not have enough knock down power for fox, ammunition issues killed it for me. The WMR i had was dreadfully inaccurate with everything except RWS JHP which was not easy to get, knock down power was not as good as i thought it would be either, despatching fox cubs at dusk at under 50yds none dropped on the spot with good boiler room shots. Get a 17 Hornet to fill the gap mate you wont be disappointed.

WMR all day long... the closest you’ll get to an all round rimfire for Fox and rabbit.

My wmr loves the newer 30-33 grain stuff but shoots everything acceptably

wouldn’t have a hmr personally

Had a HMR, but replaced it with a 22 Hornet. Homeloaded 40gr V-Max clocking 3,000fps is perfect for the rabbits and good for foxes out to 200 yards

I have both (2xWMR & 1xhornet)

different beasts, 300 ft-lb vs 7-850 ft-lb.

hornet is my walkabout vermin gun, WMR is for the ground I can't use Cf due to landowner's wishes. If you want to use hornet for vermin reloading (excluding set up for such) will bring the hornet round cost down to WMR, which has gone up 50% or more in the last 18 months.

wmr 125 - 150 yards max, hornet 50-100 yards on top of that, hornet is also much more decisive on fox, if you don't shoot loads go hornet, if you shoot a fair bit but are prepared to reload, go hornet. If you want to be able to just grab ammo from a shop and go at 30-40p a pop go WMR. The latter is a cracking mid range vermin and hare round but hornet just smashes it into the dust, but still feels like shooting a magnum rimmie.

(PS my hornet is my favourite rifle and I've a couple to choose from)

One thing to bear in mind is if you're shooting at night or in quite a bit of volume then having disposable cases for the WMR makes it easier than having to save the hornet brass in the dark to reload. If that's not an issue or you make a brass catcher then that makes the Hornet more appealing.

Been out tonight with a mate and his hornet. Very accurate and certainly good for long range.
I'd happily have one to sit between the .22lr and. 243.
Regards Dan

well moderated hornet is not much louder than HMR / WMR, as for catching brass as I shoor off of quad sticks I just grab the case with my left hand as I cycle the bolt. Most rabbits I've had on the trot is 5 out of a group of 8 and catching the brass didn't cause me any issues then.
