Its not the best comparison as it compares older loadings in WMR (40 gr soft point) and hornet (45 gr soft point) to the fastest loading in HMR. 17 gr HMR is 2550 fps, 30 gr WMR will be 2200 fps 35 gr hornet 3050 fps so miles apart.

The one thing I would say with hornet if you shooting rabbits for the table even head shot with v-max can do a lot of damage to the neck and shoulders, if the bullet blows that way, 40 gr hollows or ballistic tip at around 2850 are a lot better damage wise.

Definitely. It's my favourite calibre, closely followed by the 204

Will be interesting to see if the .204 takes over, don't think it'll have the same charm or make you smile near as much, hornet just punches far above its weight for powder burned/cartridge size.

I would go for the WMR any day v a HMR the crack is the same but the WMR is a shed load more stable, go for a lightweight round and find the right round and it won’t let you down

ive used for years the WMR as a short range (80yds) foxing Rifle it’s good for that and as a 100 yds rabbit rifle you won’t get that out of a HMR

My hornet i use for 100 yd foxes and longer range rabbits to 120 after that 40 grn .222 takes over

i keep to that and the accuracy is bang on each rifle, no elevation just straight shooting

The new light ammo for the .22 WMR with polymer tips have given that round a new dimension. The heavier FMJ ammo hammers foxes and coyotes, and the zippy loads like the Remington have reach for crows, pigeons, rabbits and groundhogs at long range. Boy, do I wish I could go to the dump with my .22 WMR today, as I used to do with my .22s 40+ years ago, and roll rats over at long range! This modern world has removed so much good fun.

I've got a .17HMR and .22Hornet , the hornet is a cracking round as mentioned, very accurate, more energy and legs than the HMR....BUT I got sick of reloading it when used for rabbit shooting in numbers, too time consuming for myself anyway when your shooting 50-100+ most nights. I use NV and Thermal combined with the HMR due to it being a nice flat shooting round out to 120yds, when used at night it can be difficult to judge distance in some circumstances with NV and the main reason I prefer it for its flat trajectory, knock down with chest shots and ease of use, just grab a few boxes, no brass to pick up, no reloading.

The hornet is much better for foxes, and longer range rabbits if I'm going out to shoot in lower numbers...

If your going through a lot of rounds go WMR or HMR..

If your wanting it for longer range rabbit and foxes go .17hornet or .22hornet.

My ruger 77/22 only has a 14" barrel but manages 1" groups at 100 with Hornady V-max. That was shooting in the field resting on a pile of gravel. It's a great round and very effective.

33gr Rem ammo is pretty much a ragged hole in my Sako Quad full length WMR barrel

I have all the rimfire options in the Quad in several barrel lengths
tried them all on fox and rabbits

The HMR just didn't cut it as a short range fox (up to 150m) tool with the versatility of shot options that the WMR allows
If all foxes stood still, facing me on a windless day at 100m then the HMR has no issues at all.

Stretch the range to 100-150m, remove head shots from the equation due to conditions, quartering shots through vegetation and shoulders.......
WMR every time.

I haven't shot the HMR at live quarry in 7 years

.22lr still comes out more than anything else though

That's an endorsement! I know you love your semi auto's in this Calibre - is it also a pistol round? Also, how sensitive is it to barrel length? I'm wondering if Tikka will make the new T1x for the wmr - I 'd consider a trade on my Cz and then regret it, like the last time I traded a Cz for something fancy.

I am thinking of going over to wmr from hmr myself,

mainly for use as a rabbiting rifle but if a fox shows up within sensible range I need the extra clout,

any recommendations for a rifle cz's seem to be the most common on the used market,
was having a look at new cz 455 synthetic stainless does look nice for the money.

do the 30gr bullets offer a better flatter trajectory over the more traditional 40gr ammo.
seems like theres a lot more ammo choice out there for it.

25-33 gr ballistic tips, 30 gr hollowpoints,40-50 gr soft points that's some variation over the hmr in terms of choice

They aren't showing any sign of it yet as I may well trade the Ruger M77 in for one if they do . . .
