Saw a pair of swallows in North Yorkshire this afternoon ...............A great sight. At last spring seems to be on its way !

Posted on another tread but hey ho,1st Swallow spotted on the the wires at our spot this afternoon. In sunny Lancashire 4 days later than last year, I hope the poor sod's brought it's wellies.:tiphat:

We don’t see anything here in Wensleydale usually till mid April but to be honest the weather lately may push that back. Curlews and oyster catchers arrived in snow and daffs ain’t even out yet!

Pair of swallows arived about 16.00 yesterday in eastern Lincolnshire and were still around at dusk. They nest every year in and around my buildings so they may have been born here.

Lone swallow seen last night on South Downs at seafood. Also a hobby so I bet the swallow feels picked on

No sign of our resident Ospreys yet though a pair were spotted at their nest site thirty miles from here yesterday so expecting our locals any day now, as for Swallows and Martins never see therm much before the end of April 27 is the most common first sighting but we had very few last year so wonder what this year will be like.

No insect life yet so nothing for Swallows and the like to feed on, no growth yet everything is about three weeks behind very few song birds about, bird feeders are by in large untouched, normally mobbed at this time of year ,think a lot of the birds have perished over the winter.

Deer have not faired well either been snow on the hills down to about 15 hundred feet for weeks now deer have taken to coming down and raiding the gardens , which is not unusual in these parts what is unusual is what they were eating ,there will! be few daffodils this year as they have been grazed down to ground level , normally they give the bulbs a wide berth just goes to show how desperate they are.

Hi Bogtrotter,
Saw another Osprey this morning, heading over Novar towards the bottom of Fyrish way.
Don't know when the swallows will arrive as like you say there will be nothing for them to eat, I suppose they just hang about the temperature friendly bits of the south until it warms up a bit more.
Baltic East wind and Haar up here today.

Our nut feeders have been pretty busy with an addition to the usual mix of a pair of long tailed tits who have been coming since Christmas time, bonny wee things.

We also had a rat last week at night but the Airsporter sorted it out from the vast range of 5' whilst the wife's Staffy was doing circuits of the bird table.

The hen blackbird has been darting in and out of the box hedge for more than a week with moss and grass and the starlings were picking up the pampas grass and heading in to the big nest box on top of the shed on sunday. I suppose they will stop now that the cold has returned.

We were off for a run on Sunday, Drumnadrochit, Invermoriston, Ratagan, Dornie, Kyle, Plockton, Achmore, Lochcarron and home via Achnasheen and Garve, the wife commented on how many dead deer she had seen at the side of the road and how quite a few that we saw feeding off the road looked pretty thin.
There were 2 hinds in Achnasheen on a grassy bit between the road and the station eating the grass for all they were worth, totally ignoring the tourists 20 yards away.
They will be struggling for a bit yet.

Cheers
