Calibre for Kipplauf style rifle.

I do however already reload for .308 so that's making this calibre more attractive (and the massive availability of factory fodder). How easy is extraction of spent cases with a non rimmed round?

Extraction of rimless cartridge Exhibit A:

Accuracy of 7x57R at 200m in break action rifle Exhibit B:

What does surprise me with the Haenel is, unless there's an engineering problem that precludes it (which my be the risk of a rimless case being overridden by a spring stud), they didn't make the thing an automatic ejector. My secondhand £20 AYA Cosmos 20 Bore single barrel auto-ejects as does this man's H & R .410 single barrel shotgun. I think for a kiplauf using a rimmed cartridge it would make that a benefit. Watch the last five seconds of the video from 1:35 to see the ejection side on. But bottles on a tarmac road at all of five feet. Daft!

Gunshop East Barnet has 7x57R Sellier and Bellot cases at 35.00/100 and 8x57JRS cases at 44.00/100.

But visit the Norma website and you'll see that in factory ammunition BOTH 7x57R and 8x57JRS are borderline in compliance with the velocity required in Scotland. Whereas 7x65R easily exceeds that speed. Here's the three with 160 grain bullets:

7x57R
TIPSTRIKE 160 gr - Norma

8x57JRS
Norma ECOSTRIKE 160 gr - Norma

7x65R
TIPSTRIKE 160 gr - Norma

My experience with S&B was i had to ditch about 1 in 5 because the rim wouldn't fit into case holder. Quality doesnt hold up to norma or rws.

How did the S&B brass get on it? McAvoy seem to have it at about £45 for a hundred.

My memory is starting to fail me. I remember now it was privi, the slav ammo. I take it back, S&B might be alright.

I ordered my K95 in 2002 in 5.6x50R and 6.5x57R (26" barrel) on the advice of a Spanish friend who mentioned the extraction engineering technicalities EnfieldSpares goes into.

The 6.5 is a great compromise. Using the Jager tilting block means rimless pressures can be used and the 26" barrel is fast - 25-06 levels with 100gr. Cases are very common in Europe and hence can be posted and died are 6.5x57 with a rimmed shell holder.

In retrospect my mate has moved to rimless cartridges and reports no issues. From a pure nerdy and tactile pov rimmed is pleasanter but I myself would love a 308.

If big boar or red deer, you might consider the 7x65R, or the 8x57irs.

Also consider a combination gun. Your locale may allow slugs.

I have 8x57 and 7x57 in combination guns, have owned 7x57 and .270 win in single shot Ruger No.1, and now have a single shot B78 in .30-06, and a .280 Rem in a Ruger No.1.

Friends hunt with break actions in .270 and 7x57R.

I recommend a rimmed cartridge for break actions.

Aha SOUTHERN! This is the UK not the USA. A shotgun is prohibited for use on any deer save by (if I rmember aright) the occupier or person employed by the occupier of enclosed land to kill deer that are causing damage. Your woodland stalking with slugs that in some States is the only lawful method is totally illegal here. Strange but true. And where as noted permitted only 12 Bore are allowed. Any other gauge is unlawful.

I would have liked a 7 x 57R but my Blaser was on the shelf and I couldn't resist it. 30R Blaser RWS evo green tin bullets= dead deer, cant wait until surgeon gives me good to go again.
