Ive had mine cz 527 for 4 years now and love it175 to 200 yards. I got mine for closer work than that, but it's quite capable out to that sort of range. Above all for some reason, it's hugely enjoyable to shoot!

I’ve just got my ticket back with a slot for a 17 hornet, my intention is to keep a day scope on the 22 hornet and NV on the 17 ( best of both worlds - in truth I don’t want to part with 22 hornet as it’s a brilliant bit of kit). I’m looking forward to getting the 17 it’s a perfect gap stop between the 22 hornet and the 222
Mike. - what ammunition did you settle on for the 17
The choice is very limited but I find Hornady 20 grain V0-Max is very good indeed in my CZ 527. I've not tried reloading yet as the factory ammo is doing everything I want it to.I’ve just got my ticket back with a slot for a 17 hornet, my intention is to keep a day scope on the 22 hornet and NV on the 17 ( best of both worlds - in truth I don’t want to part with 22 hornet as it’s a brilliant bit of kit). .17 hornet is about half the power of .222, .22 hornet is just under .222 power
HI 25 Sharps
Haven't really gone into fps on the calibers as yet, I use my 22 hornet out to a 100 and the 222 to 200yds ish
I had a bolt break on my 22 hornet, and ended up with a wmr until mended for 3 months, the17 is a back up as most of the foxes I shoot average between 75 & 130 yes distance the 17 should fit in nicely I'm using 45 grn Sp in the 22 Hornet and it does the job with ease the 17 should be great
I don't think I will reload for the 17 when I get it, all factory loads and see what's zeros the best
Happy days
Cheers
Phil

Apart from the calibre, there is no real comparison between the two. I have both, my 17HMR is a very good rabbit round very flat shooting out to 150 yards. I've shot a few foxes with it, but except at sub 100 yards, it really isn't a fox round. Also, as it's a rimfire you can't reload it. The 17 Hornet is doing 1100 fps more than the HMR and is faster than the 222, however, the 222 uses heavier bullets. Zeroed at one inch high at 100 yards its spot on at 200 yards. It's still very accurate out to 300 yards but lacking in energy for foxes at that distance.Sorry to steal the thread however I know little about the 17 hornet. I do have a 17hmr, however I have started to reload and wondered how the two compare with a view of potentially swapping in the future
I’m talking power rather than speed, .22 wins on power, 17 wins on speed.
Either will be good for foxes to 130. Enjoy!

I really like the 17Hornet and use it in my fox control business a lot, For longer range use on foxes, I still prefer the 223 which is a better all-round foxing calibre.
The 17Hornet is a really enjoyable calibre to use, it's hard on rabbits but is accurate enough to head shoot them with, and for long-range crow/vermin control is enormous fun.
Yes i agree with thatYou can't compare a crow with a fox when it comes to actually killing them. if you hit a rabbit or crow with a 17Hornet out to 300 yards you will kill it virtually every time. The same can't be said of a fox, I'm sure we've all hit foxes with much larger calibres than a 17 and see them run off albeit for only a short distance.
With all calibres, you need to use common sense as to what distance you are shooting live targets at. If I'm using a 243for fox I know it will drop it at almost any distance I am confident of shooting at.
The 17Hornet is a very efficient calibre but, like all smaller calibres it has its limitations
Thats your opinion buddyA lad near me has a 17 hornet, I wouldn't call it an ideal fox round, even 150yds he gets runners, on the coast here so it's always windy. A 223 will dump them on the spot. I'd say your talking 150max with 17hornet
