Stalking deer with iron sights?

Thanks. I'm quite keen on one of these rifles for a woods gun, in 9.3x62 for something different. Specifically for the enormous pigs we have in the bush up behind the one block.

Have do agree about 9.3x62, my favourite all time calibre. My current 9.3 is a CZ550 stutzen, works a treat now it's well worn in and sits those boar down nicely. For the T3 there are now aftermarket 10 shot mags.

I think all the iron sight shooters should revert back to Dial-Up on the devices for some period of time which would be in keeping with the thread.....lol :stir:

(Do people still use dial up?
2) 2.1 million people use AOL's dial-up service to get on the internet. ... Rural Americans often have no access to high-speed internet, or it can be expensive and unreliable. Thankfully there are still phone lines and AOL dial-up. Yes, AOL is still selling dial-up Internet services to around 2.1 million people every year.8 Jan 2017)

I have to disagree here - stalking shouldnt be about efficiency but about experiences. Broadband increases the surfing experience, but so does hunting with iron sights

As does learning how to finish a stock but you need to practice before you be come any good at it......

We should combine these two threads... this and the latest incarnation of the hand wringing head shooting thread. Debate the logic between those that choose to shoot with open sights, but consider head or neck shooting with highly accurate rifles and fine optics inappropriate!

Would that be under the Flora and Fauna Law in Australia........

To achieve a humane kill you need to put a bullet through the heart and lungs of a deer, and you need to do that everytime you squeeze the trigger.

Same ethics apply if you are using a top spec long range rifle with big scope off bipod etc or a simple rifle with iron sights shot off hand.

If you are confident and your eyes are good enough then why not.

And just to add to @Tim.243 ‘s killer statement. As every skilled and time served tradesman will testify, be it welding, soldering, joinery or whatever. You practice (A LOT) on scrap before calling yourself an ‘expert’. Enough said....

There's definitely a few SD members who might change or modify their user name to incorporate a particular skillset:

I have a 202sauer which I ordered especially with iron sights or as we used to say just sights .I enjoy using them and have a sl5 moderator that still lets me use the open sights with it fitted as well . I tend to use open sights as my back up plan for shooting driven boar . However i would not feel disadvantaged just using them . The rifle mounts and aims just that bit faster with open sights provided you have done a your part and actually practiced using them and know there point of impact. My rifle shoots groups within 2” or less @100yards snap shooting and quickly reloading .

Many years ago I purchased my first "real" rifle it came with iron sights and not having a great deal of spare money I relied on those to feed myself,I recall shooting at a whole host of baked bean tins before embarking on the first serious stalk. I only had a simple 2 draw telescope gifted to me by a mentor to spot deer, by the time I was a little better off I purchased a scope and mounts,,, I learnt an awful lot of field craft in that time without a scope, no doubt improved by the addition of optics. later additions to the "armoury" didn't even come with iron sights, fortunately I am able to purchase a scope somewhat easier these days.

You could go out and do the longest ever stalk, come back and still have to wait for a few A4s downloading...the good old days...
Ken.

Haha......way back I used to but a lot of salvage and breaking stock from a live auction, they had a fax-u-back list which was made up the night before. It took ages for the machine to spew the paper list out, then it might stop and re-start lol.

One feature was a loop fax so when Chelsea beat Arsenal on a Saturday I would send the score to my friends fax machine on Sunday when his office was closed.....resulting in a small forest of paper for him Monday morning.....
If we lost I un-plugged mine lol
