Stuck case.

Hi All my mate has just pulled the head off a fired cartridge 2506 in a Remington 700.The rest of the case is stuck in the chamber has anybody had this happen to them and managed to remedy it themselves or is it a gunsmith's job.

Had case head separation twice. Both times with reloaded Winchester brass in .375. Both times it was down to the riflesmith

Remove stock, scope and moderator. Place it in the freezer overnight, tap out with something relatively soft. Sometimes works other times doesn't.

Obviously it won’t help you with your calibre of rifle but with the old classic rifles, Lee Enfields in .303 & 7.62 and possibly other service rifles from around the world, Burst Case extractor’s were produced, mainly used by the armourer.
When the case head had separated leaving the body of the case behind the burst case extractor (similar shape to a cartridge) was inserted into the action then pushed forward by the bolt entering within the case extending beyond the case mouth whereupon the collar of the extractor engages with the case mouth when the bolt is closed, open bolt extracting the burst case, it’s as simple as that.

Sorry my explanation is a little long winded.

I would give it a go with a circa 13mm stud extractor. Wind in until it 'bites' then attach a pair of long nosed molegrips to the extractor and try to withdraw.

You will have another spare case I presume, cut that in half so that you have a piece in your hand that is the same as the piece in the chamber. Now you will need to weld or alraldite a tap to a piece of dowelling. The tap must be sharp and fit inside the brass and touches the part that is stuck the shoulder. Turn the tap holding it tight against the shoulder and it should ( will) bite and hey presto out comes the old part.
I have done this on a couple of rifles ( none mine ) without any problems. Best of luck Sorry I was long winded and didnt see above post

A mate had this happen in his .243

DIY stuck case removal:

Carefully drilled the case, tapped it to 6mm, then a piece of bar stock with a bigger hole in it, threaded rod into case & tighten the nut. Pulled the case out easier than expected.
These days, I have an RCBS stuck case remover to hand...

I have done something like this, twice now, with nothing more complicated than an empty case of the same type that has separated in the chamber. It will depend on the SHAPE and Dimensions of the case involved , but if the case has a reasonable taper you may be lucky like I was. Simply place the empty case neck inside of the broken end of the case stuck in the chamber and push the bolt forward to give a firm engagement of this new, empty case into the fired, broken, stuck one.
Hopefully the extractor will lock over the case rim...

Now try to withdraw the bolt and hopefully the new empty along with the broken case will withdraw from the chamber. If this doesn't do it, try using a little freeing lubricant - like WD40 - and give a little squirt around the edge of the case in the chamber such that it gets to creep in between the case outer surface and the chamber inner surface. Let that sit for a while and try again what I have set out above...

Good Luck!

ATB ..... and shoot safely

Apologies if this is obvious to you, but just in case it wasn't.....If using WD40 or similar, be sure to clean it all out afterwards otherwise you might have another problem when firing.

I have successfully used the threaded bar and drilling and tapping a thread in a case stuck in a reloading die. If it's feasible, i recommend it. Screwfix sold all the kit very cheaply...around a tenner from memory.

Stuck case remover. I've only had to do it for real, once, with a batch of .303 using a stuck case remover for the Bren Gun. Have to say that it worked just as it was meant to.

How many times has the case been full length sized and reloaded? Sounds like incipient separation. You might consider a neck sizing die.

I made a case extractor by clamping a piece of drill rod vertically in a vise. Take a hammer and hit the ends till it flairs our flat. Gently grind or file off about 3/4ths of the flair out area leaving a hook on the front. Gently ease it in from the back end and slowly push it up till the hook drops in the gap between the case mouth and start of the throat and pull to the rear and it should come right out.

This is how I get out 5.56 cases. Works on same principle as the stuck case removers posted above by hooking on the case mouth.
