243 legal??

I think 6mm bullets are actually .243"......according to Nosler. Yes 6mm is actually .23622047". Maybe someone can enlighten save me going to measure some "6mm" which I load for my .243"

The law says bore of ."240 or greater. The bore in rifle barrel terms is the hole they bore before rifling it. The law does not say groove diameter of .240" or greater.
It's just another cock up by dumb British law makers made with the help of an expert or two.
If they wanted to stick with the figure of .240" they should of referred to the bullet instead.
Always gets a stir going this one does, I pull it out once a decade or two :)

The debate about the legality of the .243win cartridge for the larger species of deer has gone on for years. Technically the cartridge may possibly not be legal but I think it's use is so widespread and accepted that it's highly unlikely to be legally challenged merely on what constitutes bore diameter. Ultimately if it were challenged then only the courts could decide that one and in all probability they could say that the difference between what is legal and what is not is measured in thousandths of an inch (or fractions of a millimetre) as to be inconsequential.

Does anyone remember the mark 3 Ford Escort van. Well that van had very small windows to the rear of the drivers seat. Obviously there for improved visibility and safety and not just for looks. I heard a story that technically this may have then made all escort vans subject to car tax. Vans were exempt car tax but if windows were fitted to the rear of the driver in a van the van then became liable to car tax. I am lead to believe that H. M. Customs and excise decided that when after several years of production of this van running into hundreds of thousands of vans it was pointed out that technically all mark 3 escort vans counted as cars it was decided to ignore the technicalities in this instance. It could possibly be a similar situation in respect of the 6mm /.243 cartridge and its failure to fully meet the technical legal definition.

Can someone measure a 6mm/243 bullet please? :D
And when you believe everything on t'internet wierd things happen. Aliens, panic buying of stuff you won't use....

Think we have gone a bit off the point is there any non lead 100 grn bullets available tor 243 or will we all have to go bigger calibre for large deer in Scotland

WTF as it stands the .243 is perfectly legal at present and until anything changes we should just carry on!
As a side not has anyone ever been stopped and had bullets confiscated for testing of weight, mv or ftlb?

Absolutely not.
I used 30/30 for years. When I told my buddies my intention to use leverguns in 30/30 they all scoffed and said it's barely legal. Plod never batted an eye.
The deer hated it.
