Anschutz rifles

I once had an Anschutz 1717 .17 hmr, the one with the 54 match action and two stage trigger. I have to say it was the most accurate rimfire and best trigger of any rifle I have owned before or after and it was also the first rifle I hit almost every target I shot at regularly.
I only got rid of it and got a .17 rem because I chest shot a fox at 100 yards and when I went to find it , it was not there. The question I would like peoples views on is this.
Are Anschutz rifles more accurate than the other makes like Tikka, Howa Sako etc. I find myself drawn to another in .204 caliber with their two stage match trigger and 23 inch barrel . It seems hard to find a quality rifle with more than a 20 inch barrel in .204 ruger, I don't like American rifles and The Sako and Tikka have 20 inch barrels or only longer in varmint barrels.

I have a 1984 1813 Supermatch (54 action) that I use for bench rest and if I do my bit with the right ammo, it gives excellent results. That said my 457 mtr is very accurate to, and gives excellent groups @ 50m and very decent ones at 100. That has a 20" barrel as opposed to a 23" and comes with a 5 round mag. Granted they're both 22 as opposed to 17hmr but I'm guessing the quality will be the same?

It is the 1771 centerfires rifles I was interested to hear about, but your match rifle sounds like its a good piece of kit.

The 17 series Anschutz are inherently accurate rifles. As far as getting rid of your 17/17 because you didn't find the fox think you were being a bit hard on the rifle and probably yourself! The 17HMR isn't a fox calibre, it will kill them as I have with my 17/17 many times, but even with the 17 Hornet that packs a lot more punch than the HMR, you will still get the odd runner (I've had runners with a 243 it happens).
The 204 Ruger is a totally different proposition and is probably one of the best fox calibres around. It's a very accurate calibre and strangely seems to shoot pretty well anything well from almost any length barrel.
As to whether Anschutz rifles are more accurate than the other makes you mentioned I would suspect all modern high-class rifles are more accurate than the shooter!

I’ve an Anschutz 1730 Montecarlo in 22 hornet, 3030 f/s (40gr V-Max) very accurate and great for fox and rabbit around the fields (see 4 shot group below); it genuinely punches well above its weight.
I’ve a Tikka 204 ruger, my go to long range fox rifle; its only 20” barrel so velocity is down a bit at 3750 f/S. I’ve also a Sako 17 REM too, great Long range rabbit rifle and very fox capable too.
If your shots are under 200 yards, get yourself a 22 Hornet, accurate, very quiet and cheep to run and you can have an Anschutz; mine cost me £350. If you want a 204, buy a cheap European 222 and get it rebarrelled with a 24 - 26’ barrel to get the most out of it. Just now wondering if it’s possible to rebarrel an Anschutz 1740 222 in 204; having said that, whilst the Anschutz 22 hornet action is a pleasure to use, I’d rather have a Tikka or Sako action with the larger centrefire cartridge.
Anschutz currently make the 1771 in 204 Roger with a 23” barrel.

I had an Anschutz 22 Hornet. It was a beautiful rifle with a superb trigger. It was accurate as well. Unfortunately, it left the fired brass in a somewhat bloated condition that required me to neck size only to reload. Anschutz told me that this was within spec because the rifle was not intended to be used with handloads. I traded it off and bought a CZ 527 American. The brass comes out of that rifle looking unfired. I never looked back. Still have the CZ. It has killed countless rabbits and prairiedogs.~Muir

I was out with mine yesterday 1717dhb first time in years just never used it and at 250 metres I was getting a 1.5 inch group on the gong, just playing using strelok app, the ammo is about 7 years old, great fun, but thinking of getting another anshutz in.17hornet for longer range crows.

My 22 hornet is a cracking rifle and very very accurate, the older rimmies i found had a clunky bolt. the hornet bolt is quiet and as slick as you like.
There’s nothing not to like IMHO only way i would sell mine would be to have a another new one in the cabinet

I have a 1517 in 17hmr thumbhole and had a 1770 (I think) .222. They are both beautifully made, tremendously accurate rifles, a joy to own. Selling the .222 is one of my big regrets, it had a lovely double set tigger and a beautiful walnut stock, it shot tiny little groups all day long. The 1517 is the rolls Royce of the .17hmr world, it beats the pants off the CZ’s I had before it, no contest. They all have their idiosyncrasies though, the .222 had a crap safety that requires you to remove your hand from the pistol grip to undo it. The 1517...well put it this way never ever take the stock off, took me 2 hours and an extra set of hands to get it back on, there’s about 4 washers on each bolt! Also 4 round magazines. That being said, great great rifles, superb accuracy and build quality that I have rarely seen.

Anschutz .22 was purchased in 1965 by a very good friend of mine sadly gone to big hunting ground but left me rifle still accurate and doing the business with an xt fitted

I have an XIV carbine in .22 lr and its a dream. I am unaware of them making a .204.
My .204 is a Savage Weather Warrior but has a rifle Basix trigger and is far more accurate that its operator. If you could get an Annie in .204 with 2 stage match trigger and thumbhole walnut stock it would be a dream rifle.

Only if they moved the locking lugs to the front..... All the CF Anschutz i've seen (Hornet and .222) were basically enlarged rimfire actions with rear locking lugs. Like a CZ 452. BTW: My girlfriend has a CZ Varmint in 204. Superbly accurate rifle.~Muir
