Anybody used this calibre and if so what's your thoughts on it compared to say 300 win mag
Tbh I'll stick with the 308 for this country I do have 300 win for abroad and the hill also on the ticket but a friend was talking about the 300 Norma the other day I'd never heard of one tbh he is more into target shooting hence possibly why he was on about itA friend of mine in Texas has one. He rates it, although it’s expensive to reload. He’s lifting a 215gr bullet at 2,964fps. At 1000yds it’s still cruising at 1,820fps!
For UK use though I think it might be overkill unless you can regularly shoot long distance (1,000yds plus). Under that I think a .300WM will do the job, and you’ll probably be able to sell the latter on more easily should the time come!
Basically yes it is. The parent case for both the 338 Lapua and the 300 Norma is the 416 Rigby. This is the video or one of the videos of stalking with the 300NMIs it a necked down 338 cartridge then ?
I have got a 300nm.
It is one hell of a round

The 300 win is a hell of a round lol
I'll have to have a go on that lolI have a .338 Norma, the .300 Norma is a necked down version.
Srvet is right, Norma and Lapua .338s both use the .416 as the base, my simple understanding is the Norma Case has less taper but is shorter to optimise the use of .300 grain bullets in magazines without compromising case capacity whereas the lapua case is longer but more tapered and .300 grain bullets have to be seated deeper to work with standard magazine lengths.Basically yes it is. The parent case for both the 338 Lapua and the 300 Norma is the 416 Rigby.
As far as I remember the 358 Nm 308 Nm are based on a shortened H&H 375 case, As was the 300 Win mag the only difference between the 300/308 is the neck which is longer in the Norma round and therefor better from a reloading point of view, They both have nearly the same case capacity and similar performance.
I have PH 308 Norma on a Santa Barbara action. I stuck it in a Boyds stock because the 'California Curl" stock it shipped with was a brutal bit of lumber.~MuirThe 300 Norma Magnum is a newer developement . The older 308 Norma Mag was brought out in the early sixties and , as you correctly point out , used the same case as the 300/375 H&H Magnums . I had a ridiculouly accurate older Model Parker Hale ( thumb slot , military 98 ) in 308 Norma , great cartridge .

I make mine out of 300 WM. It's a little short but on a neck that long who notices?? Wonderful cartridge.~MuirThere are still a lot of those kicking around up here , I've seen a few of them restocked , in one way or another , for the same reason . I used to neck down 338WM cases because Norma brass was , and still is , very hard to find . The only reason I got rid of it was because I also had a rifle chambered in 300WM . Looking back , I should have kept the 308NM .
