Best Scope for .270 under £800

I need some advice.
Happy to buy new or used scope for .270.
Needs to be able to be used in relatively low light for early morning woodland stalking etc but would be an all rounder for deer. I would prefer something with an illuminated reticle but this is not essential. Currently using a Schmidt and Bender 6x42 on a .308 and it just doesn't have enough magnification. Has anyone got any experience with Vortex scopes as I have vortex binos which I love.

I've got a viper 3-9x40 on my 270 that works well for me at low light. I also have the Viper HS 4-16x44 on my 6mm (This can give a bit of a grainy picture at high magnification at low light but is fine at 6x-8x at dawn and dusk. I'll probably buy the Diamondback 4-12 x 40 when I need another stalking scope, as it seems like really good value.

or for better low light performance:

I use a Hawke 8x56 Endurance with LR Dot on mine, and absolutely love it. Having said that, my budget was sub-£400 at the time. With your budget I'd be looking at 8x56 still, as I prefer the fixed-mag, but I'd be going for German glass such as Schmidt & Bender, Zeiss, etc :thumb:

Beats me that no-one wants this!

loads of new and used options here:

Docter 2.5-10x48 IR £475
Swarovski 3-12x50 IR £899
Sightron Siii 6-24x50 IR £599
Meopta 8x56 IR - £475

Delta Titanium is a cracking scope for the money
not a stalking reticule though
needs IR to be effective in low light (carry a spare battery!)

what model is the Swarovski 3-12x50 IR? it sounds interesting.

Not illuminated but a second hand Swarovski PV6-18 or 6-24 would be a nice scope. Plenty of light too. Just trawl the second hand market. Good luck

I can't pretend to understand what a 6x42 on a .270 could possibly not have enough magnification for in the stalking field; and my preference is for a fat reticle over illumination. :)
However, if I wanted an illuminated ret and too much magnification on a budget, Edinburgh Rifles' Docter would be the one I'd think about first. Big objectives often need higher mounts, which I'm not keen on.

I bought a vxiii from Edinburgh Rifles last year, thoroughly chuffed with the scope and service! I’d get the Swarovski before anyone else snaps it up!

The 6x42 is on a .308 which I am keeping. The reason to want more magnification is that I have had a few instances where the 6 x has worked but I would have preferred to have had a little more detail in the scope. I definitely don’t need 20x magnification but a bit more would be handy.

A good compromise and within your suggested price range would be a 7x50 fixed scope, IR. The Meopta 'Artemis 2100' is not produced anymore but some shops still have stock, and there are some good ex-demo / used options to be found. A quick Google search showed some stock (new) at McAvoy Guns.
